ive pottered about as not too much to do, so i have been out blasting greenfly with my squirty bottle on direct nozzle, found my senetti covered in an 'oil' on the leaves and found it was leaf miner so have cut all the leaves off that to avoid spread, then had a look at all the zinnias that i was going to seel but haven't got round to it due to wind damage etc and most of them had leaf miner so ive dinged them all in the compost bin.

will they die in the compost bin over time ? yikes just thought of that

found 'something' had dug out a plant from my rectangular planter but i can't for the life of me remember what it was, there was just a hole and dug compost over the two plants next to it and i couldn't find it discarded anywhere so have replaced it with one from somewhere else.

Planted six courgettes, two each of three types., and 69 swift f1 sweetcorn plants. One failure out of 70 seeds.

Was away again this week, 3 days cruising down the Thames in our friends' narrow boat - lovely and relaxing.  Really interesting to see all the ingenious little container gardens on narrow boats - some so planted up you can hardly see the boat, just a floating garden!  Back to seriously working on the garden from tomorrow...

Saw the serious weather warnings about thunderstorms, hail, torrential rain etc etc last night, so rushed out in the twilight to retie my delphiniums, tie up bigger clumps, took down hanging baskets, put everything I could  carry back in the greenhouse and generally battened down the hatches, went to bed and prayed.

This morning, no rain, no thunder, and sunshine, albeit a bit close and thundery like. I've even got a big umbrella over my big front door trough as it would be a disaster if that got trashed a week before we open.

Although it's started raining now, please, please don't let it get any worse!!!

been dealing with leaf miner today image seems to be everywhere and has devastated my leucanthamum snow lady, it was fine last week and bigger than ever and between the leaf miner and aphids it was looking all forlorn and ive had to cut most of the leaves off, chopping leaves off other plants affected too & dealing with blackfly on dahlias & ants, feeling very despondent and fed up today with all the pests.

Really knackered trying to dig out tap dock roots from garden got fed up n put on weed killer upset to report to chemicals but new house n didn't realise massive problem . Any tips ?

  • Dock and other deep rooted plants need a big spade and plenty of work. Dig a square the width of the spade on each side of the Dock and lift out that chunk of soul and put it to the side. Now have a look in the hole for any bits of roots you can see. If you see any, dig around them until  you cant see any more. It's a pain, but less annoying that repeating every year.

In the last few days I've planted out some Lupins, moved more out into the cold frame for a week or so whilst I try and guess where they will go. Planted seeds in trays for the perrenials I want flowering next year. Teasels, Scabious and G Pratense. Need to find somewhere for them too. I can see raised beds being built in the Autumn.
