Anyone done any gardening today?

  • Tidied the shed, removed a couple of clematis from pots and planted them into the border. Used up the last of my soil conditioner around the beds and clipped some osteospermum back.

Yesterday whilst in the sunshine I was digging around a Euonymus when I heard some rustling in it. I couldn't see any animals until I looked up into the bush and could see a leaf moving. On closer inspection, it was a wasp chewing its way out of winter hibernation. I'm no fan of wasps but was fascinated to see its first movements of spring. Once out it gave itself a good clean before flying off. The benefits of early gardening!

  • Lovely photos and a great pile of compost!... The weather turned today so just managed to water in some slug nematodes, although numbers are hugely down on previous years; either from last years application or maybe its to early to spot them?!

Still got peas, beans, sunflowers and potatoes to go, hoping to a warmer drier weekend!

Been a busy bee this morning.  Planted violas and daffs.  Emptied a load of pots ready to plant up again (not one single nasty critter but loads of juicy worms) v. suprised.

Dug up a large scrawny heather and planted a hardy Gardenia that had been languishing in a pot for ages.

Checked the greenhouse and watered a few plants.

    Pruned the Coryopteris.

Still plenty to do so might be out there again later.

You can never have too many clematis! I remember the open gardens in Nafferton a few years ago, (between Driffield and Bridlington) there was a garden with over 100 clematis!

I'm with Oldtyke, I think I'm at something like 30 clematis and I've only just started.

Carrots and parsnips sown in the raised beds, another 15 broad beans in small pots sown.  Fair bit of weeding - they're growing fast now!  Noticed my verbascums have finally germinated, as have the seeds from a Japanese quince fruit which I left on the plant all winter before sowing them a couple of weeks ago. image

Be careful Oltyke and Hostafan.  Clematis fever is easy to catch and there's no real cure.   I have learned to restrict myself though after losing all my alpinas and montanas and winter flowering clems to early, heavy frosts.   I now concentrate on Group 2s and 3s which will withstand -25C.

It has been perishing here today with strong, bitter easterly winds and a high of 5C so I have limited myself to checking on the seedlings in the greenhouse, setting up a new potting bench in the shed and tidying up the work area at the back of the house.   Tomorrow should be warmer and by Tuesday we should get into double figures so I'm hoping to get the veggie beds forked and raked for the new babies.
