I'm feeling smug today! I have a new privet hedge for free ! The plants were being given away on a local community webpage by a lady who wanted to get rid of a little hedge in her garden. She had already dug most of them up and put them in random pots with no extra soil so I went round and gathered them all in black bags to bring home. My poor little car was stuffed to the ceiling! I was going to get someone in to dig a trench for me but decided to have a go myself this morning. The ground was easier to dig than I expected and once I had taken all the tree roots and stones out of it it was simple to just bed the plants in. I added some tree / shrub compost that I had in the greenhouse and a bit of bonemeal to help them along. There are about 8 more plants still in the lady's garden so I will go back in a couple of days and help her dig the last ones out to bring back and add to my instant hedge. Next year I will let it grow about a foot taller than it is now just to screen off my 'compost corner' a bit.
Cold fingers here first thing this morning even with gloves on, Perki! I wasn't sure about watering them in because it's likely to freeze again over night. I thought I might do it first thing tomorrow so it has all day to soak right in before it freezes again.
Wow Daryl2 that is pretty impressive! Tidy work. I bet the lady was very happy that they were going to a good home too. Looks great. I like your tree behind the screen. What a lovely shape. May I ask what it is?
It's some kind of apple but this year we just had mountains of smallish fruits that were rotten and full of grubs before they even hit the ground. It looks pretty in the spring though and makes a nice shady place to sit and read a book on a hot day.
Daryl2 - hedge looks great. Wish I could find a way to screen our compost area a bit more.
I also got some free plants Sunday - 2 medium sized pampas grasses for my new border. Then planted them Sunday afternoon. Spent a while deciding where to put them and then lining them up to hide metal fence posts. Failed slightly on that front from the house, but they should get bigger and hide it eventually. Yesterday my friends hubby dropped off a large potted magnolia that has out grown their garden. Planning to position that between the grasses, but will need to dig a very big hole first.
My garden guru and helper came today and, despite the dreadful weather - 3C, wind and rain and hail - we spent 3 hours clearing weeds from a bed and the chipped bark paths in the far corner and I bunged a couple of salvia Hot Lips and 2 ricinus in the beds in the greenhouse for over wintering and dug up the last of the dahlias.
Then it started to hail with a vengeance so we retreated into shelter and sanded down some rusty metal obelisks so I can smarten them up over the winter with a bit of patinating varnish.
All in all we've earned ourselves a good hot shower and maybe a glass of wine with dinner.

Well done with that hedge.

Sounds like gardening heroism in the face of adversity there, obelixx, but I bet you have a nice warm glow now that the work is done
