Checked the propagator this morning, but nothing coming up yet. That's only been 3 days - guess I will have to be patient! lol.

My first tomato seedling has appeared today, Its a variety called "Bambino" and did very well for me last year. So that's 5 days since putting it into the propagator. So it begins .... !

Thanks for the videos Simon, I will be growing tomatoes for the first time this year and it was great to see the plants progress from start to finish. Seeing all the other fruit and veg you grow was nice as well.

Sowing seeds this weekend, "gardener's delight" and "moneymaker"  from a mixed salad collection Wilko, are these easy varieties for a complete beginner?

Hi kitty, yes those are good choices and are easy to grow. Gardeners delight are one of my favourites, they are abundant croppers and have a great taste. I am pleased you found the videos useful and thank you for kind comments. Good luck with your toms!

Right, here we go again... have planted a mixture of sungold, black cherry, sweet aperitif and tigerella into modules and they're currently sitting in a seed tray in our living room.

Sungold are my faves for snacking, black cherry for cooking. Sweet aperitif i tried for the first time last year and ended up with tons of them. Tigerella i've never tried before...

Good choices BF206, tigerella iis a nice variety too. I haven't grown it for a couple of years but must get some for next year! post on here and keep us up to date with progress.

    Will do, Simon!
  • It's a few years since I last sowed Alicante so decided to give them a try again this year: also T&M Sweet Aperitif; and for the first time ever Currant Tomato "Sweet Pea" and T&M Cristal F1. Sowed the seed today in a propagator in the GH - now I have to be patient!!!!

Hi Simon - I'm a bit daunted by the work involved with changing the compost in my greenhouse. Ive only had the greenhouse for two years so I guess I should really change it this year. I grow toms and cucumbers in there.  I have, each year, added lots of manure to it and mixed in a bag of shop bought compost too. Will adding nutrients like this to it negate the need to replace it?

  • Growing the same crops in the same soil year on year is, I'm afraid, a recipe for disaster. Any soil born diseases from a previous crop will be passed on to the following crop and will multiply regardless of how much manure, fertiliser etc is used. It's for this reason I have concrete & slab floors in my 2 greenhouses and always grow in growbags. Crop rotation is very important in GH or outdoors to keep a healthy & productive plot. This means changing the growing medium in a GH as the same plants will be grown in the same space. Don't forget to clean the GH thoroughly inside either (I wash mine down every year with a dilution of Jeyes Fluid) as air-born diseases, fungal spores and some pests will overwinter in there and need treating.
