Fun isn't it? I love hearing what people in the opposite season are doing.

  • 27 new plants from secret gardening Co all labelled at last.  Now to tackle the 270 spring bedding plugs which desperately need potting on.

  • I gave up after 100 plug plants potted on and cleaned the house for my supper guest.  It is not forecast to be all wet and windy tomorrow.  brighter spells are included!

  • Lovely day down south today, cleared away spent annuals, spot of weeding, deadheading and planted up some autumn/winter pots. Tomorrow plan to plant bulbs and some winter bedding. image

  • Yes we all have been busy making the most of the last glorious week.  Tonight at the Alpine Garden Society meeting the buzz was what strides everyone has made this week.  We had a lovely talk with beautiful pictures about the Massif central in southern France and saw lots of the flowers we grow in our gardens growing in the wild.  But the raindrops were getting bigger as we came home so the garden will get watered tonight..

The talk about the alpine plants sounds as though it was good. It's really lovely to see where they come from and how they grow naturally. Can you name a couple of them, Marion?  I'm a bit curious. Strangely enough, can't think that I've ever seen mention of plants from that area. Not sure why.  It's always from South Africa, Asia or even Australia, but never from France.image

  • We saw pictures of several geraniums and saxifrages but what were everywhere it seemed were violas - purple and yellow, Pat.  Masses and masses of them.  France has well over 4000 species of indigenous flowers whereas the UK has only about 1500 because the ice age almost covered it with ice killing all but the hardiest.  We often have talks about the alpines in the Dolomites and very often the Himalayas.  Next Saturday, among the four talks at the AGS Conference we have one on Hepaticas and one on the Russian steppes.  A lot of the bulbs we are having a talk on will come from the Pyranese and Eastern Turkey.  We saw Narcissus pseudonarcissus by the fieldfull last night in the Massif as well as Narcissus poeticus.

How interesting.  I wonder why this gem hasn't been publicised like the other areas, such as I mentioned earlier.  I'm sure you'll enjoy the next talk.
