  • Found homes for my new plants from yesterday's outing.  Diascia in cod frame till the spring; Potentilla in alpine sink at back door; Hylomecon which flowers till November has three new buds on this morning so found it a companion to show off its lovely yellow four petalled flowers.  It is a close relative of the blue Himalayan poppy.

No doubt you are in the garden , your talk sounded good

  • It was an all day conference, GWRS,  Four talks - one on Sowing growing and showing alpines; one on Hepaticas; one on being creative with bulbs; and one took us all over the world with pictures of the alpines in the steppe country in the snowmelt.  It was top rate.

  • The yellow dahlias in my raffle prize bouquet yesterday have the middle petals tipped with orange -I hope you can see this in my pics of them.  The ten blooms filled two vases.

Dahlias look lovely , at the allottment I have a bed of dalias with some red & white ones , bees still buzzing around them image

  • looks like a couple of days of damp weather for Bristol from today.  Not very warm either at top temp. of 15.  But needs must now so i will put on my raincoat and boots and try to get the last of the pelargoniums into the conservatory today.  I could do some plug potting up too as the garden umbrella is still up over the kitchen patio table for some shelter.Thee is room for another two trays in the conservatory then the rest will have to take their chance outside, up on chairs to avoid the slugs and snails and in a sheltered spot.  They should all be of a decent size to plant out end of October,

Good morning , yes cold and wet in Lincoln , weather seems bad most places for next couple of days , paper work today so doesn't matter image

Have you thought of using slug pellets in glass jars to protect your outside trays ?

  • Good idea,GWRS thank you.  I have some organic slug pellets in the garage.  I will go and look them out.  I knew I kept those extra jam jars for something useful!

  • Yes Susan the squirrels are active at the moment.  I notice scrapings on the top of my bulb pots which i have planted up and put a layer of grit on top and that is before i plant the tulips which are their favourites.  I am still pulling out seedling oak, hazelnut and chestnut from the stashes that were forgotten last year!

Hello all. I'm still awake at 12.30am, but I suppose that's because of all the laying around I've been doing.

Funny thing - when I was sorting out seed packets recently, I came across a Yates packet of WHITE flower Mix. I had forgotten it was at the back, and when I read the use by date, it was 1995. So I thought, ok, I'll put them in and if nothing happens, thats out of the way and I can forget it.  You'll never guess - there are little seeds of all shapes and sizes sprouting in the plugs!  When they are big enough,I'll check the packet to see what was included and pot them up. Amazing.
