No, I'm in Switzerland. Not quite in the Alps, but we are at 1500 feet.

  • Ah! I wondered how you could be confident of having frost. image So yes, just leave well alone at present.

Mine are in a cold frame with the lid off, they germinated in there too. I've just nipped off the tops, doing much better than the ones I grew indoors last year, not spindly. Now, in view of the above, I think I've pinched them out too early. But they had 3 - 4 pairs of leaves, fairly close together. No frosts yet, mild and damp. Mild and showers forecast for the next 10 days, in Dordogne.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
  • Would just say if  (as you say) they have '3 - 4 pairs of leaves' when you guillotined (sneaky bit of French for youimage) them,  they will be fine.

Hi David can you help me i bought a pkt of sweet peas and it said on the pjktthat you can use an propogater that is what i have done it is the first propogater that i have had they have started sprouting and are growing rapidly can you tell me if i have done the right thing by putting them in there and if i have when should i transport them to the green house . i was late sowing them as pkt said oct and i planted hem 1st week nov so they have been growing for about 3 days .

  • Hi, Wills

Unfortunately, sweet pea seed react by taking off like a rocket if subjected to too much warmth...resulting in spindly & weak  seedlings.....certainly wouldn't use a propagator myself.

Probably best if you transfer propagator and seedlings (don't know if it's heated or unheated) into a cold greenhouse or coldframe straight away. Leave the lid off during the day & replace it at night for a week or so......thereafter dispense with the propagator altogether, just leaving them in the cold greenhouse or coldframe.

PS. Of course don't switch your propagator on, if it does happen to be heated.

David thanks for getting back to me its electric and your rite they have taken off if i move them in to my unheated green house will the seeds that have not germinated will they still germinate ?

  • "will the seeds that have not germinated will they still germinate ?"

Almost certainly, just replace the lid a night until they have....then dispose  of the propagator.

cheers i will leave the lid off during the day and put the lid back on at night until the seeds have germinated .then i will move them into the green house .

  • Wills.....no, put it all, lock stock & barrel in your unheated greenhouse tomorrow.

As if I know where it is now!  image
