David I think it is always a big help to see photos of what to do image Fidget did that for people who are propagating Brugmansia and that helped me image

    Hello Everyone

Been reading a lot about sweet pea flower on the forum.

So i'm gonna give it a go.

Now what i need to know is when to pot the seeds off in the greenhouse and when to prick the leaves off . When to plant them outside and how tall do they grow?

Also thinking about planting them at the bottom of my garden the sun rises behind the fence and is in the garden all day(when it shines that is he he) i'll post a photo see what you think

     Thanks

  • Baz -  I see you've had a few reliable tips elsewhere. However, from what you ask I would just add.

Sweet peas are best grown in the same pots from seed sowing to planting out, because they don't like root disturbance....hence no potting-on/off.

'Prick the leaves off'? I presume you mean pinching-out. Best to nip out the growing tips when they have two or three pairs of leaves (detailed pictures on the previous page of this thread).

They prefer a sunny, open situation and don't plant too thickly, otherwise they'll be troubled with mildew later in the season.

Finally, expect them to grow to at least 8 feet, so support accordingly.

  • I purchased some Sweet Pea seeds from a grower/breeder in Ireland a few years ago and his tip for germination was to put the seed onto damp kitchen roll paper on a shallow dish, cover them with cling film and as soon as the root tip appeared, pot them up. The paper needs to be kept damp, not wet.Iit worked very well for me because mice are a big problem in my garden as far as peas, beans sweet peas etc.are concerned. they eat them as soon as they are planted.

I have loads, Baz..but I suppose this (although only a small vase) is fairly typical.
