..this is something we have to be careful of when buying an Austin rose, as I have read that they often plant their shrub roses in groups of 3, but when we buy we tend to only get the 1 rose, and can be disappointed that we don't get the mass of flowers that we see in some photos...
my st swithun often seems to have flowers that are too heavy for it's stems and they point downwards, also a few have balled, i understand it can happen in very wet weather but 1 has done it since it's been drier, the petals seem to be stuck together, has anyone any ideas please?
sorry tina, i've planted mine in the middle of a mixed border with hardy geraniums, salvia , i think it's only expected to reach 3 or 4 feet hiogh and a couple of feet wide, it's only been in a couple of months so by next year i'll have a better idea, go on , get it!
Rose, that sounds perfect - I want one for the middle of a mixed border and am going to go for a climber for the back of it - will need to do a bit of reorganisation. Love hardy geraniums too - great for under planting. Unfortunately Alan doesn't have a scent so that's a consideration for my new roses.
Beckie, I'll be looking at spirit of freedom now- depends on colour! I'm with Rose regarding the colour scheme.

Yes, this dense planting for effect is a ploy they all use and (as Salino says) something to keep in mind when choosing.
