..so you should be...no need to be shy...very nice indeed, and suits that ornate wall you've got there which I like the look of very much...
NGCards..
..thanks for this other photo... it would be nice to see the flower when fully open too, perhaps in a couple of days... to see what shape it is... does it have a strong scent? it's very beautiful...
.. the rose I have in mind, and this can only be a tentative suggestion, is named after a well known gardener... 'Chris Beardshaw'.... here is a photo of the rose from the BBC site...
..when you got the rose, what kind of container was it in? it seems strange to be given a rose as nice as that without any kind of label...? was there no name on the side such as the breeders name for instance, like 'Harkness Roses'... or somesuch?
Thanks David. Was a bit shy about posting with all you seasoned rose growers! But I'm proud of my patch!
Oh goodness! Absolutely no reason for you to feel this way....your contribution is just as important as anyone elses, Supernoodle and I genuinely thought your border looked beautiful.
No nothing I'm afraid, I got it bareroot in a bag with 3 other roses, the labels were lost but the others have been identified since flowering, this is just the last one to bloom.
It doesn't smell just yet but maybe that will change once it's fully opened, fingers crossed that'l be tomorrow but we'l see! lol I keep taking photo's of it at different stages I managed to get a photo earlier of it for you of it in it's pot so you can see it's structure.
..well, I ought to perhaps take back what I said earlier about it not being a floribunda.... I can see now that the rose does appear to flower in clusters... apart from the flower in the front, there are 5 buds forming on each stem, so you could well be right in that it's a floribunda type [cluster flowered rose]....
...it's very healthy looking... let's wait to see some more of it, when the flower opens fully and also when all those other buds are in flower too... but don't hold out too much hope here... that's not an easy one... are you able to tell us the names of the other roses that came with it...? you said that these have been identified...
Fingers crossed The others were Wendy Cussons and a Rhapsody in Blue.
I have just realised there was one more in the bundle which I planted in my front border that remains un-identified too as it hasn't bloomed yet. How could I forget about it?! lol
my generous gardener, scepter'd isle and harlow carr have buds almost ready to open, showing bits of colour...the will open... when we're away ! oh well it'll be something to look forward to when i have to drag myself away from cornwall
Hello all, beautiful pics as always. I need some reassurance; remember I told you all I bought a Gertrude Jekyll and L D Braithwaite from DA? Well, a week in the LD B is flourishing while the GJ looks like a dying/nearly dead weed I called DA to ask them if this was normal and was told that some roses go into shock once they're planted. I'm a bit gutted because I haven't treated it any differently from the LDB.... Is this normal? I'm hoping it will recover at best before the Autumn, if not in the spring. Thanks
I wouldn't be satisfied with that response, Bev. Container grown roses shouldn't receive a check in growth like that.....that's the whole idea of buying & incurring the extra expense. Having said that, I'm sure a reputable company like David Austin would supply a replacement if necessary.

That's a really nice border, Supernoodle.....nothing like a red rose for lighting-up the garden.

Growing from bare-root is the way I prefer.
