Thanks hogweed, yes my intention is to kill all the grass and weed off, then lift the dead turf, I am then going to turn the existing soil, I will need 2/3 big bags of topsoil to make it level, will I need to mix the existing soil with the new topsoil or can I just lay, level and tread the new topsoil on top of the existing?

Don't remove all the stones, even in a veg bed. stones help with drainage and also help the soil to warm up more quickly and stay warm. Of course move the largest but don't sieve to remove them all. That was advice I was given at an RHS study day on vegetable growing, was a huge relief as the soil on our allotment is full of stones : )

Thanks for the response  chrissieB, this is for a lawn so would the same apply?

Clearing more stones today, I am surprised at how many there are.

Could someone give me there thoughts on these topsoil's please, I think my existing soil is good but I am going to need to add to it to make things level. I have found two local suppliers. would one be any better than the other?

Can you visit them personally to check the topsoil? I am no expert but I would be looking for bags that have been freshly filled, no weeds, no obvious bits of roots, and free from large lumps. I'm sure others could comment on the smell and/or feel.

lol I wouldn't know what I was looking at, one is classed as grade 1, the other says it is stuffed with nutrients.

On a plus note it looks like I have found a home for the stones. image

Yet another busy day in the garden, I have spent the day clearing yet more stones, I accumulated 50 rubble sacks so far, thanks to ebay and gum tree all 50 have been collected today, the only part I have to clear of stone now are the ones under the pile of rubbish.

The rubbish is being collected tomorrow and I will probably get another 20 bags of stone from under that.

Flippin 'eck - you really don't let the grass grow under your feet do you!

That really is a great achievement!  Respect due!
