GardenGirl - not being allowed to have a shed we all have to be very organized before setting off for the plot to make sure we have everything we need. I do have a fold up chair hidden behind the trees and take a bottle of water to drink. Having said that being a small village it's not too far to walk back home to get more supplies (but annoying just the same).
Forester2 is tricky having to know what you need to take all the time that must be planning what you will do before going, understand the annoying bit of having to go back and get bits done that a lot for the station garden now have a small yellow grit bin we use for our tools like that you have hidden a chair
No, no shed as yet, gardengirl. Have heard that two empty plots have two sheds on them. Hoping that if the plots are'nt taken by end of the month I can have one of the sheds. Fingers crossed.
Pruned the hazel last month so now have some good, long branches for supports, will move them up to the plot tomorrow and take pics for the record.
Had a good day in the garden, got all sorts of jobs done. Very satisfying as I know I'll be spending most of the year on the allotment . My plot is four and a half months old!!
Gardengirl- we are hoping to have quite a bit of it for flowers so now planning what flowers to grow. hopefully we will get the keys tomorrow, so excited!
Started looking into the beehive cert, the council will give us info tomorrow on the plot and the rules of the allotment.
Stagbeetle congrats on getting you plot really exciting for you lovely to have the family on board too. My plot neighbor keeps bee its fun seeing her in a 'space suit' honey is soooo delicious I understand its quite hard work. Another holder on site has won many awards for his honey and also sells them in the lottie shop lucky us.Spent a girls day out recently in your neck of woods-retail therapy was very therapeutic! I'm in Surrey so not far to Portsmouth.
Bought my new toy-electric saw it's simply fab. Cut all my timber to edge all the beds just need to fix them now. Planning on making planters and a cold frame-such high hope for a non DIYer!!
Have started to sow, Aubergine chilli and another set of broad beans as the over wintered ones looks as if they are going to be a 'poor show'
I got my allotment last Easter, 125sqm. It was a mess and I only used half of it. The soil was very poor on the part I have used. We have sprayed the other half with a weed killer and after few weeks covered it up with old carpet and left till autumn. In October we've dug it all up and cleared from weed roots as much as possible. We put down some chicken manure and leaf mulch. Would you recommend putting top soil as well?
Congrats for getting your plot Stagbeetle, you must be chuffed
Zoomer, i found a wooden folding table and chairs on a skip, needed a coat of outdoor wood paint, mine is now green, looks quite retro now, think I will have to hang up bunting lol
Bunka, get lots of horse manure on you soil too if you can. Other plotters on my site get coffee grinds from local coffee shops by the bag load. We also have a local mushroom farm and they sell off their used mushroom compost.
BizzieB that would be good if you could get one of the plots with the shed on so fingers crossed
Weyplotter your new toy sounds good which one is it? is it with out a lead just a battery? nice to have home made honey - you are a DIYer now you have a tool
Hello Bunka where are you? have a look on gumtree on freebies and see if any horse manure or topsoil going free or Google well rotted horse manure in your area
Ginagibbs you have been doing good with your skip hunting - true allotmenteer's get as much stuff for free
Stagbeetle I want a good sized bit of the allotment to be for cut flowers, I have loads of seeds free from mags GW mag has free zinnia seeds out from 20th Feb, Have a look at the links below for some ideas on cut flowers to grow
How big is your plot Stagbeetle? It must be very large to be able to park a car on!
we have a car park at the entrance, but access to the plots is a narrow path(wide enough for a wheelbarrow) so everything has to be carried or wheeled to the plot and I'm number 14!! Keeps you fit mind!!
At my first site, we have a car park for 3-4 cars and a path down the middle of the site that you can drive down.
At at the chicken site, access is up a grass lane to the gates but that's it. generally parking is out on the street if you don't want your car sliding towards a pebbledash wall! Then it's a narrow path to access the plots.
I am pretty much central at both sites, so sometimes it's easy, sometimes not. We have to use a wheelbarrow at the chicken site to get anything to the plot
