I'm happy to be wrong but depending on the variety you need two pear tree's for them to cross polinate and they need to be in the same polinating group or the one either side - if that makes sense.
You may get away with one tree, if someone else on the allotments has a pear tree but the polinating rule still applies. Distance between the tree's needs to be considered too, that's if you choose to get one on the basis another plot holder has one which can be cross polinated with yours. Bee's are known to travel long distances but they are not necessarily going to fly between your tree and another plot holders tree if the distance is huge or if there aren't many bee's about.
My plan is to get two tree's, pears don't seem to be that popular here, only one tree on another plot.
I had a similar problem as you last yr with apple tree's, nowhere for them to be planted and was advised to clear the weeds and dig over an area about 3ft square, then plant them out. You can then dig over the ground around them at a later date providing you ensure the tree bed remains weed free.
I couldn't drive past Aldi this evening without checking out the fruit tree's and bought two pear tree's - Santa Maria and Butirra. There weren't many to choose from but one looks like it can be grown as a fan. Hoping to plant them on Saturday if the weather is dry, at £3.49 it was hard not to buy.
Zoomer44 Brilliant that you got them, that is what I would do fan train it, they do well that way in large gardens that I have visited
Think even though I would like a pear not going to get one yet too much clearing and digging to go on the plot shame and shed building so need to concentrate on that when I can
Thank you so much KEF, very much appreciated. I love gardening and growing your own, but now I have enough space for a bigger project than usual I don't know where to begin!
Been out to Wyevale got my free spuds gone for Wilja second early, beetroot seeds - they were free as buy one get one free on T&M seeds so brought some more strawberry seeds with pink flowers and parsnips on a roll from Mr Fothergills and lots of bird food for home
Hello Harriet, gardening is so good - nice to grow your own
This is a brilliant time to get an allotment plot as the weeds should not be growing so much that you can get on with digging, figure out where you want paths and beds - do you want raised beds or ground beds, does your allotment get free bark chipping?
You can get your potatoes at this time of year from most Garden centres (GC) and use old egg boxes to chit them grow small sprouts on the potatoes put them in a light place does not need to be warm but not really cold
There are 3 different sorts - first early, second early and main crop potatoes - which is just the time you leave them in the ground to what size you get
Beans and peas you start growing from end of April easy to grow - you need lots of pea seeds to get a good crop, beans you do not need as many seeds I grow my beans up a wigwam of bamboo cans 2 per a cane
Just looked at your other post your on the Isle of Wight I am on other side of water Southampton - great that you have a shed, greenhouse - not got them yet on my plot, also good to get free seed trays and labels

Zoomer44 I am still thinking about the trees, a plot going the opposite way 3 plots across near the top of my plot has a pear tree or may be two

Harriet , is this your garden or allotment ? Are you able to put pictures on site
depending on size you could creatre beds 6' by 4' or 6' by 6' so that you can plant / weed beds with out walking on them
You could get a cheap Book from a shop called Works or Library on Allotment / veg growing
look forward to helping with info , best of luck
