Another fine mild day for gardening. I have had to chase the birds off my lettuces - they were pulling them up by the roots. I have never seen birds thinning lettuce seedlings before but then i have never had them outside like this before. Mr. Fothergills trials have certainly made my Golden Jubilee Year in the garden an exciting one. I will harvest the rest of my sweetcorn today and some of my grapes and apples and try to fill up the green wheeliebin with prunings.
Getting dark so had to come in but it was lovely out there today - blue skies all day and warm. Green wheeliebin nearly full again. Will plant some Aquadulce beans tomorrow where I removed the cornstalks from. I try to never have bare soil just as you see in nature. Mt newly planted daylilies are looking good and my large lavender plants the fairies brought. I took a big bowl of grapes next door as they are dropping off the bunches now. Still have apples to pick and distribute tomorrow but no rain forecast for next four days.
Awww, fog has returned to Bristol this morning so will have to be patient till it lifts before venturing out. Forecast is for sunny day after it does and it is still mild - 11degrees. I could start making Xmas lists and get overseas cards ready for the PO. I must water my new amaryllis as I have had it three days and I find a little water every three days is the correct amount to keep the buds opening. No doubt I will have loads of pictures of it by the time the winter is over.
ning but did get some good pics in the conservatory and at the front door. Now the cotoneaster leaves are turning red as well as the berries there is a decided red theme outside.
I wish it did not get dark so quickly when a lot of the morning was a wash-out because of the fog. Very short of daylight today but did quite a bit. Pruning vines and buddliea and now just piling it up as the green wheeliebin is full. Perhaps the fog will not appear tomorrow morning.
Warm clothes definitely needed for gardening today. It is a very gloomy damp cold day in Bristol. I will warm up first by doing a quick clean up in the house and deadheading in the conservatory. I think the greenhouse heater which i switched off last week in the conservatory will have to be switched on again tonight as night time temperatures are falling to 2or3 this week. I need to take great care of my "Winter Garden" now. The cold frame and outside salads will need cossetting tonight too so I will write myself a note to do this before it gets dark and put it on the bun tin which I raid when I have my tea in the afternoon. When you get to 86 these devious ways of reminding yourself of jobs you think about in the morning are very important or else you find yourself kicking yourself for being so stupid when a favourite plant dies on you. Verdun I am not amazing but just enthusiastically caring about all things living. - which includes myself GWRS. I am so glad to know you are still reading my posts. My Golden jubilee Year is drawing to a close at the end of the month but I hope to start a new thread about my efforts to support Bristol's Green Capital of Europe Year.
Looking forward to a new thread next year Marion, I think you have just about the same weather as us down here in West Devon. Misty damp and what we call 'hanging'
