Flumpy1, tomatoes are such fun. you can grow tiny berries in great quantities in hanging baskets to huge beef tomatoes on large plants. The crops are very early this year. Another beautiful day in Bristol. I have picked up the fallen leaves from the drive already. They are yellow lime leaves which make it look as if autumn is arriving but it is the drought that has caused them to yellow prematurely. A big watering session now.
Your flowers are really holding their colour Marion, lovely to see and I'm tempted to grow tomatoes again particularly as you reminded me of the smaller varieties - hanging baskets would make good use of my limited space here. Now why didn't I think lf that?!
Plum tomatoes sound intriguing LindaTaylor, are you getting many on the plant?
Flumpy1 your photo really does capture the heat! 80???C in the shade by 4pm here yesterday.
Cooling breeze today so it was an early start at the allotment again, I wasn't the only one! Now home, cup of tea to hand and enjoying the shade.
Early in the morning and late in the evening are the best time of the day for heavy gardening work at the moment. Plum tomatoes usually give a good crop in a warm summer like we have this year. I usually am without fresh tomatoes in March, april. May and June but have loads in the freezer for then. End of Feb. usually sees me taking the last of the fresh tomatoes, quite red which were put in the drawer quite green, out to have in my salad or on a sandwich. My so called "Cream Sausage" tomato is a yellow elungated plum and quite delicious.
I grew plum tomatoes last year and I couldn't keep up with them! I had 5 or 6 plants and every single one of them produced loads and loads of tomatoes
In the end they had to become pasta sauce as there were just too many of them. I'm still eating it now so that shows how much I made!
Marion the flower show on 2nd august is the same day as the 10K race I'm doing, next door! If I'm not too hanging, I might well pop in afterwards you'll know it's me, I'll be the sweaty smelly one lol.
At the moment Bizzie, I have just one big fat tomato that is just beginning to go red. I had a bit of a problem with 'blossom drop'(me flowers fell off!), but Kef sorted me out with some sound advice, and my plants are now covered in very promising flowers. So, fingers crossed! Pasta sauce was my aim for them Fruitcake.I might have to look out for"Cream Sausage" Marion. Oh yes, and hanging baskets for cherry tomatoes!!
Very hot here too-all the seeds that I sowed on Sunday have germinated already!!
I potted on my godetias for autumn and winter in my conservatory today. Yes, seeds are germinating in a day or two now. Fruitcake i am judging at the Aug. 17th Flower show. This should be after the judging of Bristol in bloom i hope but the Henbury Show comes before that. Picked up yellow lime leaves that had fallen twice in the drive today and watered in two sessions. It does not look like freshening up for days yet so must resign myself to it.
Well done Bizzie B, when are we coming round for tea ha (only joking) , I'm growing tomatoes but I'm a beginner, I've got five plants and one has just flowered this am , they drink a lot don't they , off to work now catch you all later, have a lovely day .

Just look at what I saw in the garden this morning
A bit blurry when enlarged but sure there are nine spots! Made my day
I like the thought of fresh pasta sauce Fruitcake so plum tomatoes it will be next year.
Crossing fingers Linda
