    About ten days ago I

picked a bunch of bare forsythia twigs from the garden and put them in water behind the new pic of grand-daughter no 2 in her school Prom dress which I had for Xmas, thinking the buds when they opened would go well with her gold top.  The first buds opened today.

Today my box of trial material from Mr. Fothergills Seeds arrived and what an exciting parcel it is.  Five jobs in all to tackle.  I will let you know when I start - when it is a bit drier.  If you would like to see how the trials are progressing go to  http://blog.mr-fothergills.co.uk/nation-of-gardeners-december-planting-update-who-needs-the-shops-at-christmas-when-you-have-mr-fothergills/    It is a good read!  My results are the Bristol ones.

Yesterday's parcel contained "Charlotte" seed potatoes with instructions to plant five in the ground and five in the smart green patio planter that came with them; antirrhinum seeds "Purple Twist"F1 billed as having white streaks on gorgeous purple flowers and reaching 40inches so a good cut flower (and good to set off my golden annuals) ; two packets of pepper seeds - Snackbite Mixed and King of the North.  It just gets more and more exciting as each box arrives.

I'd love to know the results of the Charlotte. I always grow those, but I grow them in the ground.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

It will be interesting. Busy-Lizzie.  I love the way Mr fothergills are exploring different possibilities in different parts of the country in this project  and the participants are being so resourceful and careful too.  I have left over compost from last year which ordinarily I would have used but for this trial i shall wait till this year's fresh compost is in the shops.

Oh what abeautiful gardening day in Bristol. !9th January and blue skies everywhere, bright sunshine and mild enough to garden just in a sweater and warm trousers.  I have five big wire baskets stuffed with weeds and brambles to get into the wheeliebin from the butterfly garden but the recent wet weather has soaked them and, after struggling right down my very long garden with just one need a reviving cup of coffee.  may do another later. And if this weather goes on for a few days will soon fill them up.  Must take the camera out soon.  i am sure I get the best pictures when i am feeling good about the weather!
