Cheese before pud is a good idea - you can finish the wine with it (or have some more!)
Topbird (apologies to everyone else who probabaly isn't interested, but I can't seem to make PMs work): The boat's in Southampton and will stay there for the forseeable future so I can fulfil ambition 1 - to visit every harbour and anchorage in the Solent. Then I aim to go further afield - south coast and across to France and Belgium. And eventually round Britain.
Blackcurrant pie. chocolate cake, barbecued pork, cheese, lemon meringue ..... What are you doing to me. We had pork chops, roasts and veg followed by strawberries and ice-cream. The birthday cake looks good Fairy.
Enjoyed the athletics this afternoon and The Big Blue this evening. What an amazing place to visit fidget. I did manage to get my pots sorted and some plants moved up a size. Now all I've got to do is remember to label them before I forget what's what
Glad you enjoyed your visit to Eden Julie and that the dinosaurs worked their magic.
Yvie good luck to OH for tomorrow. (I said that yesterday - because it felt like a Sunday), Off for an early night,
We didnt see humpbacks at Monterey, but we saw them a few weeks previously off Rottnest island in Western Australia. I haven't seen a great white in the flesh yet.
Yummy things to eat on here tonight - that cake looks delicious Fairy.
Steve - have never sailed in the Solent. OH has - said it was very busy but lots of nice places to go.
Fidget - we were also in Monterey about 15 years ago - lovely holiday. We went to the aquarium to while away a couple of rainy hours one morning. They had to kick us out at closing time! - fantastic place to visit.
That was where I fell in love with sea otters - they look like aquatic teddy bears but to see them swimming underwater - wow - they are so graceful. And to watch them use tools (ie rocks) to break open a crab is amazing. Spent a second day at Point Lobos just watching the otters for hours.
Didn't get to see any whales though.
Big Blue looks like it's going to be a good programme
Heaven is ... sitting in the garden with a G&T and a cat while watching the sun go down
OH is quite right, (they generally are, I find ) it can ve very busy, particularly at a sunny weekend in summer. And Cowes week, of course. And all the rallies. But a lot of the time there are wide open spaces, and at tea time everybody heads for a marina. If you don't mind sailing (a) in the winter, (b) midweek or (c) at night it's quite tolerable. Keyhaven, Newtown, Wootton etc. are very pleasant and often quite empty.
As a matter of fact I'm thinking of chartering some time in the winter (my boat's not suitable, even if it works!) and may be looking for crew....?
California was obviously popular 15 years ago -we were there too. Loved Point Lobos with its weird rock formations, sealions and sea otters as well as birdlife. Monterey aquarium was a highlight and of course we tried whale watching too - migrating grey whales in March when we were there.
Apologies if I've posted this twice. I wrote a post earlier but can't see it. ????
Jo47, we drove down from Manchester yesterday. Long drive but we're here for a week and so will be making the most of it. Fingers crossed for decent weather tomorrow so we can try and cycle the Camel Trail to Padstow.
LesleyK, glad you got your potting sorted. There was quite a few questions about whether the dinosaurs were real (I think the decision was some were and some weren't).
Fairy, that cake looks good! I hope Fairylet had a lovely day.
