  • re another opinion: I did not mean to run down regional accents, I explicitly said that a posh accent is 'no more or less worthy', neither posh or regional, or working class or indeed any accents in my opinion should be a deciding factor in assessing someone’s worth, either positively or negatively.

As long as they can be understood and have something to say worth listening to, I couldn't give a flying fig whether they're public school educated from Windsor or comprehensive school educated from Barnsley!

Re: Another opinion - please take the time to re-read my comment, as it went to great lengths to stress that 'posh' accents were neither better or worse, more or less worthwhile than any other. It is the insistence on regional accents, and the evident prejudice against people without them, that's the issue - I could listen to Geoffrey Smith forever, as he was well spoken and easy to understand and the accent was no bar to the listeners experience, and neither is Rachel's simply because it’s deemed 'posh'. That said, I wouldn’t bow to the late, great Geoffrey's opinions of gardening attire!
  • Oh no i always skip monty in the gw magazine, find him pompus and thinks everyone should do as he says, its like being back at school, him being the teacher you didn't like. Ok if you want to move forward but why him, bye bye gardeners world. Hope you more experienced gardeners and veg growers enjoy yourselves.
  • Now then ontheotherhand - at it again - comprehensive in Barnsley! That is just a bit of Northern prejudice now - Barnsley has an excellent grammar school. I do not approve but if that is how they want their education then that is up to them. Why did you assume that they only had comprehensives?

These points are just nothing to do with gardening. All I want is to get Toby back on screen. I am not sure I could stoop to watching ITV but hey if they were to have a gardening programme with him on I could be lured away. I will not be watching GW that is for sure.

I am off to talk to my scarecrow, dressed as he is in chunky cords with leather patches, he agrees with me on gardening matters. He does have a very earthy accent but what else would you expect of someone who lives in the garden fulltime.I have yet to consult him on his opinion of GW - do not think he watches. I bet he would prefer Toby though - he has more sense in his straw head than the BBC.
  • Some one else with a sensible scarecrow.

Mine isn't smart like yours as she only has an old dress but I think she would fancy Toby as well. Also agree that she would make more sense than the BBC. Why, why,why have they replaced Toby ? It is a stupid mistake that they will regret in time.

Does any one know of a garden prog on another channel? I don't get much time for the telly and can do without watching monty but I will miss Alys and Toby. I liked their style as they were friendly and catered for new build gardens. Lots of people live on new builds and the advice was good.

The only thing wrong with Greenacre was that unlike most new build sites Toby was not always digging up bits of stuff the builders dumped. I dug up enough broken bricks etc to use as rubble under the path.

I will miss watching GW but I will not watch monty. He bored me last time and I do not want to be bored again. Goodbye GW.It was fun for a while and I learnt a lot. Hope some one got me a good garden book for Christmas so I can carry on learning.I suppose I could sign up at college and do a course.
  • That's it then. The dull and ever-so-boring Monty Don's coming back.

Toby, Alys and Joe were superb, despite being hampered by the GW production team in their efforts - and now they're being made scapegoats.

So Monty Don returns for the dull and boring Hello readers to get their 'famous' (ha!) name back. More dumbing down by the BBC, less and less justification for the licence fee, and another BBC programme that won't be watched in this house.
  • Re: Another Opinion - and I'm sure Windsor has comprehensives too, me thinks you do protest too much & miss my point (again).
  • I'm sure Windsor has comprehensives too, the point's missed again.
  • Why is ontheotherhand going on about schools?
Surely the point of this is to air our views on GW.
My view is that I will no longer be a viewer when the dreaded MD comes back.
I think that responder579 is missing the point.
  • I thought Toby Buckland was very good and resent the return of Monty Don
  • Quite right tenaj. I feel very cross that they have just taken it away from Toby, he was superb. I shall give up GW - what a waste of a good programme.
