I can't understand why people say " I stopped watching when Monty left " feel they have any right to comment on what came next. Clearly the blue rinse brigade have got their pin up back. As for the rest of us, we have to put up with Mr Patronising ( if you don't agree with me, you're wrong ) Don.
Adhemar I don't think people are being sexist, I think people are rather baffled as to why the powers that be have decided to get rid of Alys and replace her with Rachel?
After such a strong reaction to what has been announced are the producers going to enlighten us as to why?
"I am delighted to see Monty returning I thought that that the present format lacks interest to real gardeners. It has become more of a dumbed down entertainment slot. Our garden club with more than 100 members almost unanimously agree with me"
Yes - much the same as our local geriatric garden club. All the women over 80 fancy Monty Don as well - but the more intelligent, thinking people round here love Toby and Alys and are devastated to see such quality replaced with the ever-boring non-gardener Monty Don.
Gardening for morons and Daily Mail readers (much the same thing, really) - thanks Monty. Thanks BBC.
So I gather that Monty Don writes for the daily mail - thats one pile of manure being written for by another. It is crazy replacing Toby and Alys - young, intelligent gardeners. It would be like ripping up young plants and putting down a mulch of stale old slimey compost and hoping that everything will come up smelling of roses. Complete madness BBC. I agree that most old ladies I know - some are even gardeners appear to like MD, but they like TV rubbish like X factor too so that is about the level of it.
Jane: What an incredibly smug and rude commment. You might do well to remember that you will be an 'old lady' one day, and when that time comes you might resent being diminished by people who regard you as being worthless and brain dead, just because you're over the age of 50. You might also remember that it was your generation that created the culture in which X Factor thrives, not mine! And to refer to somebody as a 'pile of manure', just because you don't happen to like their style is offensive and puerile.
Avril I am over 60 and quite pleased to be an old lady but I am very angry that the BBC have the ability to sack a perfectly competent TB and AF to go back to an old fashioned way of doing things. Not all old ladies feel that way I know. So no I am not of the generation that produced X Factor. I am forward-looking and have a strong belief in giving intelligent young people the opportunities they deserve. This is in preference to becoming stale in my old age.
All interesting and enlightening reading and clearly in favour of Toby and Alys (yes I've counted them!!) So will the BBC take note? Doubt it as they are obsessed by celebrity as with the majority of the media these days. Those postings with the misguided belief the Monty is 'an expert' need to read up on him and research all the daming and negative comments he has made, and no doubt will still make, about Britsh gardening and gardeners (this includes his adoring fans). When the news broke and came up on screen, a room full of Horticulture Lecturers ready to go home for the day, groaned in disbelief that the BBC could drop two enthusiastic and knowledgable presenters for the charletan celebrity. We have now lost a reliable source of learning material to illustrate lessons for future generations of gardeners. Mr Don's 'expert knowledge' was frequently unreliable and made up and now the BBC are bringing that back to a flagship programme???!
Please BBC put on a proper gardeners programme and give us back our much loved Toby and Alys. Just because you think everyone wants someone fashionable you deprive us of sensible, well researched and horticulturally accurate information that came from Toby and Alys. Why not a fashion garden programme for those that need a fix of pretty but not useful garden advice and another for beginners and experts who want to learn real garden knowledge? You could call it Greenacres and then you would avoid losing all those of us who will not watch once you have destroyed our GW?
