To be honest, it's not all the fault of the presenters that Gardeners' world has been so dreadful for the past couple of years. The producers clearly lost sight of the fact that gardeners garden - they do not want all this showbizzy stuff and gimmicks. Even people who have been gardening for 30 years or more welcome tips from the experts. We want to see gardening presenters who have soil under their fingernails - Percy Thrower, Geoff Hamilton, Alan Titchmarsh and, to an extent, Monty Don all fitted the bill. It's an old cry but 'back to basics' appears to be what's needed
What a pity that Toby is leaving - the best presenter since Geoff H. Rachel is nice enough but, like Carol, as dull as ditchwater. I wonder if Monty will leave the programme "in the lurch" again.
hooray!!! what wonderful news that monty don will be back. we tried to persevere with toby, but really his roots in children's television were too much for us. too patronising and too many silly diy projects and basic gardening - it seemed like a format which might work well at breakfast or lunchtime. over the past few weeks, we had simply switched off and resigned ourselves to no GW again - so welcome back monty!
Thank Goodness for that !!! I can go back to watching Gardeners World now that Monty Don will be there - the grown - ups are back and the dumbing down will be halted.
How disappointing! I've never really thought that Monty Don was a "proper" gardener. It looks like a hatchet job on poor old Toby who really made contact. I can see Gardeners World returning to a very marginal position in this household's viewing week. And what about the garden that was developing - what a waste of licence payers money!
It is a real shame to see Toby go it really is , he is my kind of gardener and i have learnt A LOT from him. I don't know much about monty as i have only been watching gardeners world for the past two years now as i have only gotten in to my gardening in the past two years, but like i say have learnt so much especially when it comes to tropicals. But if this is true about monty being all veg veg veg then the show and greenacre will become very boring indeed as there are a lot of young gardeners like myself that don't just want to see veg veg veg. We want to still see the wide variety of plants that toby brought to the show. He was just starting to make his mark on the show. WHAT A SHAME!!
I was very disappointed to see Monty leave GW due to ill-health but also very happy with Toby's style of presenting - let's not forget, ladies and gents, that it is the producers who have the majority say in how the programme is put together NOT the presenters so it's unfair to be so derisory of Toby and Alys. The GW team obviously wanted to try something new with new presenters.
It is clear, having read all the comments posted about Monty's return and Toby's departure, the Beeb would do well to have more than one gardening programme; there needs to be at least one for veg and one for design/flowers - 30 minutes a week is obviously not long enough to meet the needs of both novice and experienced gardeners.
