I’ve only ever seen Imperata rubra in its early stage and I can now appreciate how the colour stands out as it develops and why you like it @Marlorena! Another one for the list!
And mine! Growing by the day. I've already got four of M's plants to seek out.
Clay soil - Cheshire/Derbyshire border. I play with plants and soil and sometimes it's successful
@Marlorena, @Perki, I am loving your Phlox and was wondering do you get them from specialist plant growers or just pick them up at GC's? I currently only have a couple (from local GC) but I find I get a lot of powdery mildew on them, do you get this at all? many thanks.
Well I'm whizzing through this at a rate of knots, so likely to be finished up this week.. but I hope to add to the thread as the season progresses, as I have some new plants that might be of interest later on..
Phlox 'Purple Bicolour'.. huge conical heads of strongly fragrant flowers.. long flowering, quite jazzy.. Agastache 'Morello'.. I'm liking this very much and it appears to be overwintering.. makes a change from the dark purples.. Geranium 'Eureka'.. my favourite blue Geranium, long flowering into autumn, sprawly,.. Anthemis 'Tinpenny Sparkle'.. a nice change from the yellow of this type. Ceratostigma willmottianum.. hardy Plumbago.. love this cobalt blue, I have about 5 of these small shrubs, for hot dry places, but I have found it also does well in well drained but moist shadier sites, surprisingly. No hardiness issues here through many winters.. I have 3 Achilleas.. my favourite is the bottom one 'Summer Wine'. the other above it, is 'Paprika'.. I also have 'Red Velvet'.. all need staking but flower for a long period.. Clematis 'Niobe'.. easy and trouble free, very floriferous every year..
..this first one I find to be a stunning foliage plant from May until October, when the foliage starts to turn brown.. Iris pallida 'Argentea variegated'..
Iris pallida 'Variegata' is similar except the leaves are more yellow/green.. equally long lasting foliage.. and flowers that are a little better than the above.. Peony 'Coral Beach'.. I like the way it changes colour.. Veronicastrum 'Temptation'... a quirky perennial.. produces more flowers lower down the stems too, when the tops turn brown.. Scabious 'Perfecta Blue'.. a stalwart of a hot dry border.. Halimium 'Sandling'.. a lovely plant for hot dry places.. ..the rather lovely Dahlia 'Eveline'..
@Meomye I picked up most of my phlox from the garden centres except for Monica L . Bell , I do grow a few others - Nicky - franz schubert and white admiral . Quite a few will state if they are mildew resistant I am sure white admiral is. I seen Blue paradise totally defoliated from mildew but it were on a slope without good quality soil. Might be worth swapping to hydrangea paniculata if problems persist.
Do you grow any clematis in the Flammula group @Marlorena like rubromarginata ? I got one called Sweet Love which I think Pitter patter has and trying some from seed . You've got quite a lot of plants I'd couldn't / struggle to grow in my wet conditions .
@Perki Yes I do.. Clematis 'Aromatica'.. in the Flammula group.. it has a delicious scent. I'll post pics of this tomorrow..
Yes it's very dry here and a lot of my plants won't suit everywhere.. trial and error in some cases I think.. Do you mean 'Sweet Summer Love'? I think that's a rampant type..
I should add, I grew Clematis flammula in Cornwall, on heavy clay. It did almost too well on an arch, fabulous scent.. masses of flowers..
