I am surprised you regard Astrantia as being for hot, dry places, @Marlorena, I find, and I think most literature suggests they do better in moist soils. I also find they like a little shade. Wonderful pictures.
How can you lie there and think of England When you don't even know who's in the team
My shopping list is getting rather long now @Marlorena😊! Your Geum “Blazing Sunset” really stands out in your photos, especially alongside your Veronica and Hakonechloa. I grow Geum “Scarlet Tempest” which will be getting a blue companion now! Your photos are very helpful to plan combinations.
Beautiful pictures @Marlorena. @punkdoc , for what it is worth ( extremely little , probably ) , one of the "surprises" in the heat/drought of 22 was how surprisingly well the established astrantias in a couple of the beds in queen mary's gardens ( regents park) fared. I have no idea of the cultivar though
@punkdoc Yes, I wouldn't plant it in rubble but I've had it in 3 places here including my sunniest and it did surprisingly well.. maybe I had more rain that summer.. Thank you !.
@Plantminded I just looked that one up, it's a sterile hybrid.. interesting, presumably a long flowering season.. Thanks so much..
More like A-Z of plants Marlorena, well I was a Librarian at one time it’s inspiring on these cold days waiting for our Spring gardening days , Thankyou.
@Valleysgirl ..thanks so much.. I should have put them in some kind of order but I like chaos..
@coccinella I'm most flattered, thank you, sadly not this year as we're having work done inside and out, but I have pondered next year as a few local people have shown some interest. Let me see how that goes, long way ahead.. Thanks to your friend !..
Sorbus vilmorinii... an outstanding small ornamental tree for even the smallest garden, it's never getting in anybody's way.. rich autumn foliage and berries that change from crimson to pink to white.. I've had this in gardens since the 1990's, this is the first year it's got fireblight, just after this photo was taken.. Aquilegia chrysantha 'Yellow Queen'.. just love this plant.. Clematis 'Avalanche'.. a young plant, male, so no seed heads.. You need 'Early Sensation' for that.. Salvia 'Blue Note'.. shapely and striking, yet I found it got lost amongst other plants, so best on its own. Hardy in this pot for some winters unprotected..
Eugenia uniflora 'Mt. Etna Fire'.. the Surinam Cherry.. hardy to -7, mine survived that but probably not much more. Needs winter greenhouse protection and I had to give up the struggle.. such beautiful foliage like this all summer, myrtle like flowers in Spring and big purple berries in autumn.. only for west Cornwall/Scillies really..
Hypericum moserianum... for an evergreen shrub with bright yellow flowers all summer - this is it, and compact too.. where a thorny yellow shrub rose isn't wanted, I find this a most satisfactory alternative.. Helianthemum 'Ben Ledi'.. a favourite, always puts on a good show with rich dark green foliage and a rounded habit.. Hemerocallis 'Stafford'.. I can't be without this plant.. flowers 3rd July-25th August.
