I am really enjoying looking at your lovely photos. Not only is it is giving me a few plants for my wish list but what I am finding most useful is seeing the planting combinations in real life, great to see different colours/sizes etc together. Very inspiring and thought provoking and has given me a few ideas to try. thankyou.
Allium 'Millennium'. / Crocosmia 'Carmine Brilliant'.. I grow these together.. the Allium is rhizomatous, not from a bulb, so late summer flowering, and is superb in August. Bees and butterflies home in on it.. I think it's fabulous.. Crocosmia 'Carmine Brilliant' lives up to its name and provides a rich vein of colour.. quite long lasting..
Salvia 'Nachtvlinder'.. a bit sprawly and I find the colour doesn't stand out too much in the landscape.. Phlox 'Rembrandt'.. of my 8 or 9 Phlox this one is a bit later to flower but the scent is the best I think, a few stems will scent a room.. Alonsoa 'Salmon Beauty'.. a tender perennial I grow from seed as an annual.. it never over winters here.. late June till frosts.. Geranium sanguineum 'Matt Frei'.. I do love this long flowering Geranium.. 'New Hampshire Purple' is very similar, can hardly tell the difference.. Clematis 'Mandshurica'.. an unusual herbaceous type needing support.. Lythrum 'Dropmore Purple'.. slow to start but long flowering once it gets going.. I just love these.. best planted in a group of 3 or 5..
..batten down the hatches.. this storm has just arrived..
..this magnificent plant came to me by mistake, labelled Geranium 'Johnson's Blue'.. I understand it's Geranium pratense but it does grow quite large at around 5 feet and does not appear to seed anywhere, surprisingly.. June/July, loved by bees. Does not tolerate drought with those huge leaves, so I have to put the hose on it occasionally.. Lovely with yellow shrub roses.. ..huge mound of foliage.. I had to support it.. rhubarb like stems.. I've since lifted and planted a smaller portion.
Hemerocallis 'Radiation Biohazard'.. a good long flowering, classic spider form Daylily. Flowers from 26th June - 22nd August, nearly 8 weeks.. Clematis 'Valour'.. this seem quite accommodating for a viticella, and doesn't overwhelm so far.. I like the colour..
Delphinium 'Moonbeam'.. another good splash of white.. Sedum spurium 'atropurpureum'.. or it may be 'Voodoo' variety.. I have both and they're mixed up.. I enjoy this as ground cover for dry places.. Parahebe 'Avalanche'.. one of my favourite little evergreen shrublets.. easy from cuttings, and blooms in flushes through summer.. hardy to around -8C, not much more I think. ..it also seeds a little, so I've always got some, regardless.. .. a sunken gravel path is fun to plant up.. I notice in the bottom right hand corner, a stem of Field Horsetail is showing. One I missed.. it's everywhere here but I find dense planting, frequent hoeing and pulling, has weakened it's presence somewhat..
@Plantminded Hiya.. that would be Persicaria amplexicaulis 'Inverleith'.. it's a more compact form. That's a group of 3 together there.. I think I got it from Ballyrobert, I'm not sure, but the flowers are the usual pink, like 'Firetail'....
Hope everyone has survived last night's dreadful weather.. I had to search for my bins this morning..
That's very helpful, thank you @Marlorena. I'll be spending this afternoon retrieving all the dry Miscanthus strands that are now littering my lawn and borders. Only the Calamagrostis varieties seem really wind resistant at this late stage!
Dahlia 'Happy Single Flame', this series has dark foliage and single flowers.. Lavender 'Anouk'.. this French lavender is hardy for me.. flowers May-August..
Geranium cantabrigiense.. or Geranium cambridge.. a number of different varieties here and I mix them all up.. flowers mid May to mid July, about 8 weeks, I think they look nice with roses at the height of the season.. infinite spread but easily controlled.. ..these are 'Biokovo' white.. and 'Karmina' mauve.. Lavender 'Hidcote' gives that good splash of dark blue when needed.. Peony 'Buckeye Belle'.. large red blooms.. like most Peonies, brief flowering season.. Geranium pratense 'Blue Thunder'.. this is from the 'Midnight Reiter' group.. ..the foliage turns bright red in autumn.. very long flowering too.. Trachelospermum jasminoides.. I think south facing full sun and along a path is ideal.. needs reining in where happy as it can get very large.. makes a good screen on trellis.
@Plantminded I don't grow Calamagrostis 'Karl Foerster' but I did like Calamagrostis brachytricha for many years, especially for flower arranging, they last a long time in a vase, almost indefinitely.
Another I liked was Molinia 'Karl Foerster', which is a graceful, airy and wavy plant. Not sure I still have a photo, looks wonderful in a large pot, as my conditions proved a bit too dry in the garden for this.
