It depends how convinced you are by the answers given so far.

On my list I have left #6 and #14

I like "shingles" but I can't see how it links to reading

Thank you every one and big, big apologies. #14 should read roofing tiles not reading tiles so shingles is obviously correct.
    #6 is Polio
And therefore the only clue unanswered is 10. “To be or not to be”! that is the question. But, in short, it sounds more than the answer

Should we be lucky enough to win the first prize I feel I ought to share it with you but as that prize is usually just a modest bottle of wine it won’t go very far!

In the event of a tie the winner will be decided by the best 41st clue and answer so if you like, you can make up your own clue. Answers already used are jaundice, concussion, measles, flea, mumps, thrush, dengue, influenza, cancer, diabetes, meningitis, clot, verruca, polio, ringworm, Lyme, psoriasis, ?, stroke, sepsis, Ebola, tinnitus, herpes, plague, AIDS, autism, asthma, malaria, warts, cholera, tick, shingles, gout, tetanus, impetigo, lice, leprosy, dementia, blister, rabies.

And I just hope there are no other folk on the forum from South Rutland because I have now given them 39 of the 40 answers!

Ben, you are not convinced by SAD PERSONS? (As above). The link gives lots of other options

I was close to Polio - I went to through every blasted horse-based sport I could think of

    🙄

Wen? The use of in suggests it is a London neighbourhood so I was searching for places such as pustule, boil, zit, acne etc

Can I carry on thinking about this, Fire? My immediate reaction is that these mnemonics are not well known and so contrast with all the other answers.

It’s been a long but very entertaining day. I think I’ll work on the first tomorrow but thank you for the input. The second one is ulcer. That prompts me to offer ‘Filthy lucre makes you sore’.

I've added some other clue ideas above (no, I can't sleep).

I agree about the mnemonics not being well known enough to count.

"Aerial gun moves to create pain"

    "solicit inflammation"

    "aims with the tits "

    "The hare radio runs"
