I've potted up all my plants for dry shade for son's bed and my future bed and I've put them in a sheltered place by the barn wall.
While I was doing it there was a sunny period, then a gale, then pouring rain and black clouds, then another sunny period. Now it's grey, windy, but not raining.

Good afternoon,Ā we had a nice sunny dry start here too. Got into garden to continue pot sorting, (pulling out summer bedding etc) and actually planted some Tulip bulbs,. Stopped for late ish lunch now it's cloudy.Ā I think I asked this last year but can't remember the answer.Ā IĀ haveĀ Cannas in big pots which I have brought intoĀ the greenhouse, they are still in full leaf, do IĀ let them die back naturally or cut off the tops now?Ā Only our second year of growing them so still a bit unsure , thanks in advance.Ā
just got back in from a mooch around town. Needed a few bits and felt in need of getting out of the house for a while. The grey, dismal last few days meant not going far, so it was nice to get out today. Weāve had some blue sky and sunshine, so it felt much better. I prepared slow cooked lamb shank for our evening meal before we set off, and the smell when we opened the front door was very appetising. Weāll be eating that 6 ish. Thatās the beauty of the slow cooker, things donāt spoil. I shall prepare some mashed potato and a green veg to go with it, and might also make a plum crumble for dessert.
We are due another nice day tomorrow so I plan to get into the garden to lift the dahlias and begonia tubers, move the agapanthus to a more sheltered spot, plant some tulips and tidy up the yellowed leaves of the hosta plants. Thatās the plan, anyway š. If I get half of that done, Iāll have done well.
Sorry, @Allotment Boy, I donāt know the answer to your question, but Iām sure someone will be along soon to advise you.
hi and thanks for reading my rants. Ā I have been here 30 years, arrived with an 11 month baby who was born in England. I do live within walking distance of everything, so that is a great plus. It just feels lonely that's all, or maybe is an age thing.Ā I am with a group of gardeners @Badly_Maintained, but only occasionally I participate in their activities. Although I speak good French and a smattering of Luxembourgish, language is a major block for a lot of activities. Health issues haven't helped either.Ā
I hope it has stopped raining over where you are.Ā
Gosh @coccinella, that's quite a long time to live abroad. It's good to know that you do have nearby facilities. I don't think I socialise much, I have one friend I see more or less regularly about once a fortnight and we do chat with neighbours and regular dog walkers when we meet them. Our garden club meets every month but either I haven't been able to, or didn't feel like going the last couple of meetings. We were very busy during Sept/Oct so 'm enjoying just calming down a bit and taking stock.
I've done more leaf clearing today, although I know that tomorrow morning it will all look the same. I also stripped ivy off OH's garage and redid my bug box behind it. I've dived into more kitchen cupboards and washed a couple of dozen wine glasses ready for the charity shop.
@Red Maple, that meal sounds very moreish! We're also having roast lamb tonight so I'd better go and put the oven on.
@Allotment Boy when I had cannas I used to wait until the leaves started dying after the first frost then I dug them up and cut off the leaves and put them in the GH to dry out. Then I stored them in a frost free place. I couldn't move the pots they were planted in, too heavy.
I've been in France for 38 years, moved here with 4 small children. I wanted to stay in England, first OH's decision. I was happy that OH wanted to live in England, now I get the best of both worldsĀ

1st day back at work after a wonderful break with Charlie. Actually, felt good, I do realize my good job allows me to enjoy such lovely escapes. And, I'mĀ certain the sunshine buoys my mood. I must try and get out more and soak up whatever sunshine is out there - not much today to be sure....
Had a lovely steak and ale pie for dinner with lots of fresh vegetables, nice to be home.Ā

Good to hear you feel buoyed up @D0rdogne_Damsel šĀ Weāve woken to blue skies and sunshine ⦠itās a slower start here than is usual on a Monday ⦠OH will be in the studio and son will WFH this morning then he has a hospital appointment this afternoon ⦠he probably wonāt be back until late ish. I've had a very lazy morning so far. Been reading in bed, only just got up and had a shower. An hour ahead here too so It's 11.15.
It poured in the night, the rain on the roof woke me. Yesterday the river Dronne had burst its banks when we drove past. My little river is now in the fields. Now there is a sunny period. Wonder how long it will last?
