My ...other  half ran his own business for forty odd years.
We retired a couple of years ago.
After a small ummm,  mousey problem in the loft we had a partial clear out.
I shredded all but the last couple of years of book keeping paperwork we had stored in the loft.
After several days I blew up the shredder. but was almost done.
They suggest you keep the last seven years of tax and vat records. But having been retired for a few years we only needed to keep a couple.
So the new shredder got a good christening. :D
And it is not all gone yet.

We still have a lot of old bits of stock, it is not my place to say what stays or goes, but I do hope in the near future we can have more of a clear out....

My OH still has all his notes from college days. I wouldn't dare touch them ....😬
  • But equally, a picture my son made when he was 6 is still hanging (by a thread) on my wall.....
And quite right too!  That's not clutter, it's family history! 😁

All old papers,  works stuff and bank statements get screwed up for the compost bin.  Never shredded anything.

Strangely, given that the sale of our house has fallen through,  some of our possessions seem to have gone missing. I can't understand how some things appear to have vanished when the boxes have never left the house. There are only about 3 boxes which haven't been unpacked and I have been through them looking for the kitchen clock (which is about 30cm diameter) about a dozen times. I expect it will turn up eventually.

I'm sorry to hear that your sale fell through  @Suesyn
Ours was very touch and go, but successful. Mind you, the first two fell through at early stages, and we'd tried in 2018 and 2020, but failed.

We've been unpacking, and can't find various things. One is hanging file dividers for the filing cabinet. It's driven my wife potty.

We've only got boxes for the shed and garage to open. I suspect they got thrown out.

I'm sorry that you were unsuccessful. It makes me so grateful, despite the stress.

    Edited to add.
Also not yet found that metal thingy that makes clothes smooth.
    Garage? Shed?
    🙄
  • My metal thingy that makes clothes smooth has to be dug out from the bottom of a cupboard and dusted when I occasionally am forced to use it!

Christmas is getting in the way of my decluttering, just an excuse to put it off really. It is so painful.
  • Christmas tends to add to clutter.  Adopting a "one in, 2 out" policy helps ensure no progress is lost through the accumulation of gifts. 👍
  • I found that metal thingy!! In a box in the conservatory - or, the room that contains rather a lot of stuff that won't go elsewhere for now.

Some will go in the loft - if only I could get the hatch cover open. Yes, really!!
It's not one with bolts that pushes up. Nor does it seem to be the sort that you push up gently to "click", then drops down. There is a metal pole to use, but the hatch cover just won't oblige.

Okay, so I know that putting boxes in the loft isn't the answer to decluttering, but it would help for now - especially as the boxes to go up hold stuff for MY WIFE!!!🤯
    😇

Very slowly progressing with a cull of my sock and knickers drawer! Having recently bought three packs of new pants, and three packs of winter socks, I’m gradually getting rid of the old ones. Having to make sure I get rid of all the navy socks before opening the pack of new ones, so they don’t get mixed up, ditto with the black socks!
