Could somebody help me choose between Kew Gardens and Desdemona for a west facing hedge? Would Desdemona be a bit bushier at the bottom? The hedge will go in top of a short wall next to some steps. I am also not sure if Desdemona will be alright in part shade... Thank you in advance!
I have had Desdemona against a wall this year, south/west facing, and this winter I'm planning to plant her in the centre of a bed as I feel she needs more sun @Dasha , so maybe Kew Gardens would be better but as I haven't that rose someone will I'm sure be able to tell you.
P.S. @WAMS it was my 40th anniversary, I got four roses 😈
Probably they are those tiny varieties which are given as freebies/only P&P from GW like this. They do not amount to much.
Alas... they're all good-sized Purple Sensation ones, the kind that stare at you accusingly till you plant them. Hopefully I can rehome some locally as this is not the weather I ever feel like gardening in.😁
@purplerallim well, 15 years < 40 years so U don't deserve four. But I have now added a standard Olivia to Golden C and Harlow Carr because you all made me realise how pointlessly Spartan and self-denying I was being. Thank you.
@Alfie_ are you on Facebook? If you search the various David Austin groups (Darren Harwood's one called "David Austin Roses", "David Austin Roses Lovers" [sic], "Growing David Austin and Romantic Roses" and others) there are masses of exquisite pictures of standards.

Thank you, @purplerallim, I suspected as much. I guess Desdemona will have to stay in a pot on my balcony. I am now wondering if I should give Dannahue a go. On paper it seems to have it all, reality might of course be very different... Thank you for your help
Oh dont even talk about addiction and all. I am really hopeless in resisting all the photos here! I have been not posting recently but still read all posts and keep thinking may be I can get just 2-3 roses... may be that Brother Cadfael or Penelope lively or Kew Gardens etc etc. I have been a good girl so far this autumn and not ordered any. Lets see what happens by spring.
And when I have filled up all the space available by shrubs and climbers, you lot are posting beautiful standards.
'Tam O'Shanter' arrived today, bare root. 5 good stems and long roots. I had a hole dug which proved unsuitable so potted into a spare DA pot until next summer. A rose which has surprisingly stood its ground amongst the decreasing DA inventory.
@WAMS yes I bought it late summer this year. Arrived well packaged but defoliated (they do say it normally does arrive like this).
Put on a nice first display earlier this month which I recently posted:
I was looking for a standard and looking over previous threads and I must have ordered it within 5 minutes of seeing @pitter-patter’s one.
Well being looking healthy and flowering away:
Next to a camellia I moved into a large pot that looks geared up for a good display next spring 🤞
@JessicaS some fine choices there. I think PAoK, although a bit unruly and a few health issues, produces some of the most spectacular blooms out of all the Austins I have.
I really don't have a Good backyard. But used my balcony as container Gardening place. No stopping from my passion.

Sweet Honey 😘
Munstead Wood - the plant is chlorotic.
