March planting needs to be under a closhe till end of May, April planting the same. I still cover with fleece until I'm sure there is no frost at end of May beginning of June. I only plant into the space they are staying,  as transplanting never seems to work for me.
This is only my opinion but they look cold damaged, and the growing medium looks very rich, both of which will cause problems. You treat Beetroot and carrots mean to get a good crop. Last year's used compost ( mine is from the tomatoes) with just a sprinkling of fresh in the hole when planting the seed to get them started. Then it's just water, I mist them with a hose, and protect from insects.
Those of yours might still come as they look young, but just light watering from now on @Escapetothegarden
  • I’ve been away for a couple of weeks and in that time my beetroot have taken a bit of a dive … photo attached

Is this leaf miner, over watering or something else ?

It seems to be a bad year for leaf miner, my beetroot have been hit much harder this year than ever before. I will say that removing the infected leaves has helped and I've noticed a lot of hover flies and ladybirds around which I think has helped too.

I have the same on my bright lights chard, it's seems to be a bad year for everything, even my runner beans and dwarf beans have been attacked by slugs, snails and what else slung at them.

It seems that all the above posts are of Beetroot nearly at ground level.
Mine in raised beds haven't suffered that way, my only problem is piggie beatles ( or wood lice for those not recognising the local name🙂)

These are the first pick of Beetroot.
  • mine are in raised beds purpleallim so you are doing well ! My larger veg beds are about 2’ high and the smaller about 3’6”.
  • @purplerallim the beetroot were looking ok (apart from really slow growth) then there was really heavy rain a few weeks ago (I think end of June) and the next day or so the leaves looked bad - like old lettuce if it’s had water on it too long? Then slowly turned into what you see in the photo :(

Thank you for your advice - will water gently from now on and hope I get some beetroot - it’s strange, as when I read on how to plant them I think they said fertile soil? (Beginner here!)

  • @purplerallim your beetroot look great 🙂

No @Escapetothegarden it's the opposite they need. They need that little bit to get started, but then the roots need to search for it making larger roots 😁

These are my beds @muckyhandsmike , actually all I have, but for a greenhouse with the toms and cucumbers. They are about knee height as I can't bend the knees anymore to kneel down.😁

The back middle bed was planted in early April covered by a closhe, the front in mid May with the closhe move to it, and the cat/bird protection put over the back at that time.
