I think a lot of us suffered with slow germination and poor growth this season. Even when the days warmed up the nights we're still cold till about a week - 10 days ago. If you don't want large beets you can sow a pinch of seed and transplant as a cluster. They will grow and push each other out of the way so you get them in small clumps. Carefully harvest some leave others to get bigger if you want . There is a specific baby beet Action, sold by several seed Co that always seem to do well, I usually grow several types each season.
Thank you @Allotment Boy I’m hoping to harvest them when they are small - thank you fur the suggestion (pick carefully allowing others to get bigger).
This my first time growing beetroot from seed (first time all round actually!) hopefully I can try out a few different ones next time! (Fingers in too many pies!)
On a recent thread someone asked about leaf miners on beetroot plants and I did answer. I can't seem to find that thread now but not only beetroot suffers from these tiny critters. I have just noted this morning the first attack on my Swiss Chard (Giant Fordhook). Attached is a picture of my plants with some yellow sticky pads I placed near them a few minutes ago (so no flies trapped yet).
Yep pulled Carrots last year, they were chomping away. Nibbled Beetroot too. This year have pulled two ripe Strawberries full of piggie beetles/woodlice!

It's strange as it's not their diet at all, they feed on decaying wood. I know people see them in the garden, even in the beds (I do), but it's the woodchip they're interested in here.
