  • Been away for a week and the veg area.....well we might find it again! Did pick some toms, cucumbers and salad leaves from the polytunnel so all not lost. Now need to find that veg patch outside.....

I had 2 spare Rose de Berne seedlings, so planted them outside and gave them no care or water.
They done well and although slugs damaged most of the fruits some were ripening nicely.
I noticed a hint of blight yesterday, so harvested these huge fruits.
This morning the plants and remaining fruits are ruined by blight.
So got these just in time

    Billericay - Essex

Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit.
Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.

    Yep, you've guessed it...

Leaf celery (leaves and stalks are edible and have a stronger taste than stick celery)

The first handful of mini kiwis & some Granny Smiths.

Mild signs of blight means that it is a race against time: picking as soon as tomatoes turn colour for indoor ripening. The blight originated from an untrained (not pruned) indeterminate vine growing in another plot.

The first of the Turkish peppers.

A late bloomer Crown Prince pumpkin.

The first of the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion super hot chillies.

    Some Cuban oregano (Coleus amboinicus).

The haul of potato and carrots came from my bucket competition entries. Grown in a 14L bucket from just one seed potato - 2.44kg and yet I came third!

    The last of the cucumbers.

    More hariness...

    Chayote vine and leaves.

The first picking of the 50p coins & the last of the mini kiwis.

    You've had a good season @pinut 😁

Tomatoes almost coming to an end, these were picked yesterday.

Runner beans also picked yesterday evening.

    Grapes harvested today for juicing.

Oxford. The City of Dreaming Spires.
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth :)

I picked about three quarters of a pint of raspberries this morning, we had them with our porridge.

The plots cleared of summer veg but it's almost time for parsnips. Ideally I wait till after a frost but did a sample dig today, still getting some broccoli spears, they'll continue through to the hard frosts.
  • 2nd bucket of quinces so will get down to ........what ever needs doing with them.
These are the after we have given buckets to friends and still the tree has loads. Best harvest for some years.
and we still have the medlars to harvest

Beans have finished,  they’ve now been shredded by the wind but had finished anyway.
Tomatoes have finished,  still cucumbers growing on in the GH but not sure if the cold weather will stop them.
There are a lot of strawberries but doubt they ripen now.
Leaks are very good this year,  but then they always are,  I think our ground suits them very well.
I haven’t sown anything else for the winter,  can’t be bothered,  will spend the time sorting out the soil for next year.  One patch needs liming this year.  GH needs a really good dig out and replacing.

Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

My veg plots/greenhouse are done too, with no plans to winter plant. They are covered now awaiting springs revamp, am planning to move the strawberries again as it will allow a crop rotation of sorts.
All in all its been a bumper season.
  • Harvested yet more swiss chard. They are HUGE! The leeks are continuing to develop and the beetroot...not golf ball size but getting towards rugby ball size. As always running oiut of room in the jars and freezer.
Bottled up 10 jars of quinces (met a friend in the village who we had given a bucket full and she had done 15 jars!!!)
