Almost there … Clare Austin describes Peony mlokosewitschii as ‘a fleeting beauty’ …. almost open yesterday … yet within a few days those glorious blooms will be fading and falling … but every spring I look forward to seeing Molly the Witch, and she never disappoints.
A kind gift from my first ever Forum Friend 🙏

Everyone's plants are so much further on than here! The only peonies which have much growth in this area are the common rubra one. I gave up on Irises, apart from the ones that like wetter ground - sibiricas etc. Too much bother trying to find suitable sites for them. I love them though. My favourite is still I. chrysographes, even if it flowers so briefly. Too early yet for it to be flowering though, especially as I divided it last year or the year before.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
The only ones of mine which much growth are also common rubra. Most of mine are still at the small red shoots stage
The only iris I have are in the pond

How wonderful to have 'Molly'.. something of a classic isn't it?.. I should like to see that when fully open as it's so fleeting.. the late Christopher Lloyd wrote that during the bloom period it looks its best for about ''half an hour''..
Peter Beales are selling it in smallish pots I noticed recently.. It used to be difficult to obtain at one time I think..
@Songbird-2, Claire de Lune is such a stunner and so much earlier than the other peonies I have, mine needs to be in a more prominent position as I hadn’t noticed the 1st blooms opening till Marlorena started this thread!😂🙄 Molly the Witch looks a stunner @Dovefromabove, looking forward to seeing it fully open in the next day or so.
Life's tragedy is that we get old too soon and wise too late.
My Jan van Leeuwen peaked early while I was out of town and looked fairly bedraggled by the time I saw it. Planted in the fall. I hoped it was one early freak bud and more would follow but looks like that's it for this year.
I planted a couple of bare root Itoh peonies in March. They've leafed admirably but doubtful I'll get any blooms this year.
Hi everyone!! I love peonies and finally have the right soil to grow them here, so I’ve got a few in the back border and will have more in the front when I eventually do that!
This is the common peony, beautiful dark magenta colour and always the first to flower. This came from my nan’s garden so has huge sentimental value to me
Alertie, second year so hoping for blooms!
Shirley temple, also second year planted for this one
And sarah bernhardt, just planted this one this spring
I also have my first ever iris flower!!!
Can’t remember the variety but it’s a very pretty pale, pale blue, almost white!
Lovely peonies and Iris @zugenie I used to have Sarah Bernhardt here, I think I had to stake it but it had glorious autumn colour too... great you have one saved from your Nan's garden, always a nice thing to do, that.. something to treasure..
@SYinUSA I've always wanted an Itoh peony, these are intersectionals aren't they? I think so.. pity you missed your earlier one..
At last, the first flower has fully opened. It has taken 3 years for this tree peony to bloom after being planted bareroot. There are 3 more buds yet to open.
