Thank you! I bought a balloon flower last year and it died literally within a week of planting, or so i thought. Id completley forgotten until you mentioned that. Been niggling at me for weeks

I think it is asparagus; it certainly looks very like it. It does grow quite quickly (but not usually this quickly) from seed so is it possible this comes from a neighbour's plant? The roots look different though: asparagus roots look a bit like thick spider's legs growing from a central point. You will be able to identify it better if the shoots turn into fern.

Sorry, but is definitely not asparagus, which has fern like foliage even when tiny.
Wow, well done @nutcutlet - your plant ID'ing is so good.🙂
I was all for lumping in with the others and saying it probably was JKW and that the OP should launch a 'just in case' attack on it while it was a relatively small plant.
The fact he now remembers planting Platycodon Grandiflorus is the clincher for me and I'm glad the plant has been saved from my (would have been recommended) glyphosate attack!
Heaven is ... sitting in the garden with a G&T and a cat while watching the sun go down

I ♥ my garden.
A friend in HPS collected them and planted at the Wollaton Garden. Not a plant I have grown but one I should have taken more interestt in.

I know and grow it, but didn't recognise the young stem or leaves.
