    It looks rather like asparagus.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
  • Its baffled me. The plant identifier app i use has come up with nothing either. Last year was the first year i had the raised bed and all i had in it were some foxgloves and a couple of dianthus.

can you dig down a bit to see if you can find a root system? Asparagus has shallow roots. It could be a type of persicaria - they have deeper roots

That's a heck of a root to appear from nowhere over the winter. I'm none the wiser about what it is though. Is there anything similar nearby that could have put out underground runners, maybe in a neighbouring garden?

My asparagus has just started shooting and looks just like that if that's any help.
  • My whole garden is concrete so iv got a raised bed, some pots and planters and 2 old kids sandpits. I did scatter a wildflower mix in one of the sandpits last year, maybe it could be from that?
Apart from some lillies, a salvia hotlips and a hosta i only grew a few annuals last year as it was my first proper go.
Im excited to see what it turns out to be!

The only other thing I can see it looks a bit like is Japanese Knotweed.
So I'm very much hoping it is asparagus, but you can eat JKW shoots too.
