Hi folks, sitting on the sofa recovering from yesterday's poll clerking.Β  We had an absolutely useless Presiding Officer which make the day more difficult but she was so useful that at times we just couldn't help laughing.Β  It's a long day 6.30a.m. to 10.15p.m. but funnily enough it doesn't go too slowly.Β  Mind you I am aching all over from sitting on hard chairs.Β  No probs re Ids only one person forgot and we had a couple whose ID's were in maiden name whilst polling lists were in married name.
    Enjoy your bank holiday folks.

Good evening all. I've had a really nice day. Meeting up with the quiz gang was great as we haven't got together for 3 months - people away on cruises, attending children's weddings etc. so we had plenty to catch up on. It absolutely tipped it down here with lightning and thunder and then improved slightly towards the end of the day. I received some more plants today - Soldanella to add to the others I have. Such pretty flowers.
Hazel, I am glad to read you are happy with your hair cut - mine is next week. I have noticed a distinct lack of decorations everywhere I went today. I have to say that I haven't noticed that permanently damp situation with any compost I have but I do tend, like Monty, to mix my own and like Ante, I sometimes find my compost drying out very quickly depending on the volumes of each ingredient I use
Busy, I hope that the visit to the Doc's today has helped to answer some of your questions. Seems you had a lovely 'meet up' today too.
Yikes T'Bird, I knew it would be an expensive repair but never envisaged that much! Still, as you say, it could have been worse. Never mind 22nd December, how about 25th December?
Yvie, I guess it must be quite interesting at times being a poll clerk but you must feel that your brain will explode with boredom at others. Bit like being an invigilator when students are doing their exams.

LB - thought the 22nd Dec was marginally worse than the 25th LB because I'm still likely to have bought in all my 'seasonal' food and it would be an extra 3 days with no hob with no chance of getting a new one until the new year.

Glad you had a good time with your buddies.πŸ™‚

It's actually not too bad. We've got a double oven, a microwave and 2 gas cooking stoves so I can easily do meals with that lot - just need to think about itΒ when planning.

Hazel I don't have a problem with damp compost. Mine always dries out completely once the bag has been open for more than a few weeks. Tricky to rehydrate.

Oh my @Topbird, that's an expensive replacement😬 but it's good that you're getting it next week. As you say, with the double oven and microwave etc you're not totally without the means to make a meal. G and T needed to settle the heartbeat though after that priceπŸ˜‚
Busy, hope all was well at the doctors for you.
Weve always had the problem of compost drying out pretty quick but no this year. It's a mystery....another one😱
LB, glad you had a great time with your friends.
    Signing out for now,night all.

It is expensive Hazel but we're a bit limited in choice as it's oversized and has to exactly fit the cut out in the stone worktop. Guess wecould have put a bigger one in a smaller hole (if we could find someone to cut the worktop) but certainly can't put a smaller one in a big holeπŸ˜• Some hobs were over Β£4000. I wondered if they did the ironing and cleaned the windows when they weren't being used for cooking!

Yet another storm raging outside at the moment. Looks like the power went off while we were out and several of the country lanes had minor floods across them as we drove back. Been a bit of a stormy day.

    Morning all (from the CA),

Despite the bank holiday, that felt like a long week! In which I actually achieved very little :( When the boss can't be bothered to do a 30 second task, which is the final part of a process enabling me to pay people, what's the point? Folk who were expecting to get their weekly pay yesterday will now be chasing me over the weekend. I could go on and on but I'll spare you further ranting.

Haven't read back far but interested to hear of your election day experiences @Yviestevie. Having done two night counts in past elections, I made the correct decision not to sign up for that again this time (as I landed this stupid job in the meantime!). I might try some of the other roles in the future but think I've found the one I'm most suited to with delivering the poll cards. That's assuming they aren't phased out or they start sending them through the post (I understand some areas of the country already do this?). Given the option, I'll probably sign up for more than the 3,200 I took on this time. It's a nice little earner ;)Β

Just watching GW as I fell asleep whilst watching last night. Looks a nice clear start to the day so need to get out and about and not spend hours glued to a laptop!

  • Morning all, from Kent. Up early because my wife is going to London to stand with the thousands who will be there for the coronation. Whether you like it or not, it's going to happen.

Good morning @Biglad, @rowlandscastle444 and all arriving later. I will be watching the coronation today as it is an historic occasion - indeed part of our history. I remember as a very small person, watching our late Queen being crowned. My great aunts at the time were some of the small number of people who could afford a TV and they invited all their neighbours in to watch the spectacle. The TV was about 30cm square and in front of it was a stand with a ginormous magnifying glass on it - I was NOT allowed to go anywhere near it! Of course it was all in black and white and HD hadn't even been dreamt of so it was not the pin sharp visions we will have today. I am looking forward to the RAF fly past and I will be thinking about my Dad.
