@Alfie_ Scalloped petals, quartered rosettes... also semi-double ones.
I don't tend to like persicas much but some posters here make them look really beautiful. Funny how real gardens look so much better than catalogue pics 99% of the time.
@Athelas Thousands of rose blooms a sight to behold. Thanks for sharing
@Alfie_ I don't want to limit myself to choices of one shape quartered and rosette are pleasing to me; I like all roses
I have now returned home after a few weeks away and looking at the new foliage which has grown in the past 3 weeks - wow! they were mostly sticks with buds when I left. I think I've lost Jacqueline du Pré rose; it had rust last season and I had hoped that it will recover as I had removed most of the affected leaves and stems and isolated that plant. Fortunately, it hasn't spread to other roses. Golden Showers was one of the earliest to bloom last year,, but I had pruned it quite hard as I wanted a compact plant. It is leafing quite late this year. I spotted buds on Othello and Jayne Austin; but that doesn't mean they are the first to bloom! Looking forward to photos and experiences/opinions about both old and new rose additions to your gardens.
Oxford. The City of Dreaming Spires.
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth
I think Olivia is perhaps the ‘easy’ option but I would need to sacrifice fragrance.
PAoK looks beautiful but might flop. Both my Roald Dahl and Desdemona have been floppy but I guess that’s because they are young still, or is it a general DA feature as the flowers are so big?
Boscobel - interesting you mention that, I did see a review on Instagram where they mentioned it has a long pause between flushes. I need the rose to work hard as it’s such a small space so might not be the best option for me.
Jubilee Celebration - it is the colour that attracts me, it’s very unique which I like. I would have to wait a long time for this one, so it’s just whether it’s worth it I guess?
I can be a bit funny with colour, I love when they start to fade and you get all the different shades going on, that’s really interesting to me. I love Emily Brontë for this but you tend to only see all that detail up close, from a distance she mostly looks white. With pinks if they are pale I like more nude/blush tones and when darker more dusky/warm, similar to digitalis mertonensis.
EB from last year (photo has gone sideways, not sure why!)
@Busy-Lizzie - I believe that you can end up with Rose replant disease even if a rose has only been in that spot a few months. So if you’re able, it might be best to replace some of the soil.
@agnasia other nice pinks from my relatively meagre experience:
- Lavender Lassie... blooms a lot, smells of rose talcum powder. - Marchenzauber / Bliss Parfuma (mine hasn't bloomed yet (saw my friend's one) but the foliage is gorgeous already... fragrance is weaker though) - Deelish / The Anniversary Rose /Sweet Parfum de Provence... the nicest red buds. - Amazing Day... pretty variations in the blooms, lovely scent - Pretty Jessica (absolutely the best fragrance IMO... similar to Gertrude Jekyll) - Gabriel Oak (very weather resistant and upright. Strong scent).
I absolutely love PAOK and mine was still blooming first week of December last year... so def get that if you want it even a little bit.😁 though mine hasn't got any scent yet.
I know what you mean about Emily Bronte. Beautiful colours there (mine even turned a pretty almost lilac in autumn), and in Eustacia Vye. Chippendale / Duchess of Cornwall is said to be similar to EV but I don't have that (dislike both names).
There is also Princess Charlene de Monaco but I think it's out of stock atm...
@Alfie_ I may well be in the minority here, but I love the HT , second maybe the semi or double. It might have more to do with my dislike of all things pink, as alot of the other types tend towards pink or yellow.
Morning everyone! Just taken delivery of Queen of Sweden and am a little concerned about the two canes on the right. You couldn’t get a fag paper between them and they are rubbing. How concerned should I be? Leave til autumn and prune then? I’ve got lots of roses but always learning. TIA
@Alfie_@agnasia I have bought a rose from gift a plant shop. There were two roses Claire/Clair on that website and I was after DA Claire but got the other Clair though the label had DA Claire rose image/description. The plant was healthy, strong, nicely packed and flourished well. I have got in touch for a return and the lady responded promptly, arranged a collection and got the refund. If I want Munstead Wood badly and I can’t find it anywhere then I would take a risk for sure, will give a call to check whether that’s is Munstead Wood before placing an order . I will keep it in the pot as is until I see the flowers also will keep the postage box!

But it’s probably not worth losing sleep over!
