I still have wisteria in flower too, nothing like the first flush but it’s been moderately in bloom all summer.
Is that normal for you Nollie?

No, usually I get a modest second flush only @Fire. It may have been responding to crazy yo-yo temperatures.

I'm rather perplexed. Earlier this year I planted a Ghislaine de Felingorde rose in a corner of what we grandly call 'the orchard' on the assumption that it would grow to the south towards the sun, through the trellis to the south of it and ramble alongside a wall to the west and over some small cherry trees beside the wall. That was the grand plan anyway.

But... most of the new canes, which are growing really well, are pointing northwards where I really don't want them to grow. I'm gently trying to train the longest the other way but wondering why North? I thought most plants grew towards the sun?

    Any ideas welcome.

I am similarly mystified why any sane vine would grow into the dark. My shed is full of virginia creeper, bindweed and silk vine going rogue and apparently wanting to live in a pitch black cupboard. wtf?

That's an interesting theory @Nollie. To the north of the rose about 2 metres away is a 12 ft high apple tree and there is a smaller one to the east of it. To the west, about a metre or so away is a 4-5ft high wall and to the south of the rose is a 4ft small diamond pane trellis fence with lawn beyond. I am wondering whether the rose perceives there is more room to grow to the north and thinks the trellis fence is more of a barrier?

I shall report back next year. It's certainly growing away stronger that I anticipated when I planted it earlier this year, which I am very pleased about, given all the recommendations for it on here!
