I have culled a few pots so they are more manageable, being still not entirely well I have come to dread the rose chores. More will go but after this flush. There will still be nearly 50.Does anybody use an electric blower for their paths and patios? I loathe the petrol ones with a passion because our neighbour uses his deafening one for hours every week but I was thinking that the petals would be easily dislodged by a less powerful thing and I might not have to move everything like I do currently to sweep the patio, petals do collect in the narrow areas.
@salo.daria RJ does ball, not awfully. I’ve got a few brown blobby balled blooms at the moment but this summer has been non-stop rain. I can’t say I’ve ever noticed it before.
It’s nowhere near as bad as Bathsheba, she’s a mess!
@Mr. Vine Eye, couldn't resist it in the end such a lovely colour. Thank you!
Hi all, another newbie question please. Is it normal that my Claire Austin is not producing cupped flowers like in DA's pictures? Mine seem to be flat and raffled instead. Thank you!
I don't grow that rose but early blooms are rarely typical and those are just normal variations in bloom, I would say.. you will see more of the cup form as it matures..
'Wilhelm'.. 'Sweet Silouetta'... 'Scarborough Fair'.. 'Bring Me Sunshine'.. ..orange and pink again.. I don't mind.. 'Lambada'.. 'Wild Rover'.. 'Mutabilis'.. Astrantia 'Roma'..
Gertrude J finally started her second flush. I just love this half opened form with the lovely pale pink outer pink petals and the intense silky pink centre......
Graham T standard - first year, second flush started........
Placed it in the centre of the courtyard with four other potted roses around the base; PAoK, Desdemona, Silas M and Blue Moon.
Desdemona - first year - scond flush. This rose is just incredible. Not a single bit of black spot since I bought it at the end of June. Lovely scent, quick repeat and prolific flowering already.
Silas M even newer and looking promising for its first proper display........
I think if I just went on the bloom aesthetics alone PAoK has to be one of my favourites. Huge, stunning blooms. I find it very strange some scented roses have variable levels of scent depending on the time of day or season. This is defineitly one of them. At the moment the scent is very strong indeed.........
Placed two Champagne M own roots from last Autumn into a single 50cm pot. Already 2.5 feet producing HUGE blooms compared to the parent plant.
Lovely Parfuma. Fragrance is superb. Best of the three Parfuma ones I have for fragrance (Lovely, Royal and Pretty).
Anyone know if these Eustacia Vye blemished buds are from funghi, virus etc or a pest?
One on the other side of the plant had a small but well define hole on the side which would indiciate a pest so maybe the same pest for these?
Slight tangent on this thread but check out the tongue on this Bumblebee feeding on a verbena I took this morning.......

I dislike those noisy ones too @Tack and was determined never to own a leaf blower. However, after much deliberation I bought a combined leaf blower/vacuum which is easy to convert between each function. It has a slow speed as well as a fast speed. It's not overly noisy and certainly not as noisy as the petrol equivalents. I find it very handy for clearing up the leaf litter from bamboo in particular, especially on my patio as it's difficult to sweep out from the recessed mortar between flags! Many suppliers of battery operated garden tools have them. Mine is from Stiga - I noticed Monty using one of their hedge trimmers on last week's programme! There are many others.
Edited to add - if you don't need the vacuum function, there's a smaller, lighter and quieter leaf blower available too.
@Alfie_ fab shot of the bee.. I've never seen that before in such detail.. gorgeous roses too.. Eustacia Vye has been invaded by leaf rolling sawflies, they cause this damage.. I have found this rose more than any I have, to be plagued by these..
