@Alfie_ Yes I quite like the scent, it certainly doesn't offend.. the colour is quite striking...
Some observations on 'Penelope Lively'..
..some blooms have scalloped edges..
..whilst the blooms are a different colour, the foliage and new growth is very reminiscent of 'Silas Marner'.. and like that rose, I suspect this will be continuous flowering when established.. showing lots of vigour.. ..new shoots from leaf axils whilst still in flower..
'Royal Philharmonic'.. sweeter scent today.. I'm liking this rose very much.. 'Marie Nabonnand'.. 'Mme. Falcot'.. perhaps my most beautiful rose.. 'Mutabilis'.. 'Tottering by Gently'.. 'Eustacia Vye'.. 'Lilac Bouquet'.. 'Desdemona'.. and co.. ..I've just planted up this bed.. Allium millenium in the centre, with Crocosmia etc..
@WAMS don't know your climate but where I live it can get to -10C or less. A pot and lots of shelter is the only way I can grow Louis XIV with all the China blood.
I just realized that the comfrey is taking over a flower bed. And that the roots can go down to 180cm. I will move a lot of soil come dry weather to get it out.
@Giardiniere I think you are describing 'balling'.. which happens normally during rainy seasons.. happens to some roses more than others.. if possible you could post some pics..
In the case of the bottom roses, they never even opened up and became like that. This one did this last Autumn too, I pruned it, thinking it and winter would help but no. The other one, i bought this year, and was ok until recent rain. They open up and slowly become like that.
@Marlorena Your Royal Philly is tempting me, I have it in a basket right now!
Regarding Augusta Louise, I grabbed this pic of a bloom opening, today I noticed it was much larger with that two tone colour effect going on, but the rain was so heavy again so no gardening for me.
Belle De Jour, this didn't get pruned properly and I let it get spindly, so quite a bit had a big haircut about 5 weeks ago. Now all the new growth is sporting lots of buds and a few opening flowers, and the shape is a lot better.
One of the two Leonardo da Vinci's I have, really long lasting as a cut flower and shrugs off our rubbish weather, but no smell to speak of.
I then realised the plant was arching onto the ground, and as I said before, this area of the garden is like Jurassic Park, with evil bamboo as my nemesis. So I popped some highly attractive concrete chunks etc under the pot as a make do, and got my own scary animal to sit and pose.
@Busy-Lizzie That's a fine gazebo... I recommended 'Guirlande d'Amour' to another member some time ago, in Belgium I think they are, and I understand they are very pleased with it.. but it's on a wall as it's quite a large grower where happy.. I should think it could take over your structure given time, but needn't worry about that now, it's containable..
Consider also 'Secret Garden Musk Rambler' from Loubert's.. I used to have it, and want it back.. it's very suitable for arches and gazebo's..
@crighton03 I wish I had bought two, I love it.. ..after heavy rain..

Does anyone know a climbing rose called Guirlande d'Amour? It's white. I am trying to choose four roses, 2 pink, 1 white and 1 red for my new gazebo.
I think I have decided on Open Arms, Strawberry Hill and Chevy Chase. What do you think? Lens Roses do them all. This is for my garden in Dordogne.
