@agnasia I understand 'Joie de Vivre' doesn't have much scent, but I don't have it here..
..just to add about 'Boscobel', if grown in less than full sun, some of the blooms will be this colour, .. I preferred it to the pink but not everyone might..
@WAMS - didn’t see your post. That’s great to hear JC is still carrying on. I’m like agnasia and seem to be drawn to ones they no longer offer. Munstead Wood and Lady EH in particular. Is there any hope of ever getting the latter two anywhere? Especially MW.
@Alfie_ I have already posted this link on the previous thread. I believe this is Munstead Wood as per the Reference though they have advertised as Fragrant Old Purple. They take orders by phone and please ask the lady whether this is Munstead Wood before you place it. They source the roses from the nursery in Surrey and I really hope still there are stocks. Good luck https://www.giftaplant.com/shop/CHINA_20TH/Rosmunwood9
I regularly read this thread( and enjoy) and find it fascinating reading about everyone's knowledge and expertise on growing roses.
I'm trying again to grow a rose. We bought a Harkness Rose 50th Wedding Anniversary one today to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary later this year. Could I ask if John Innes Number 2 Potting On Compost will be okay to use for it when we pot it on into a large pot please? ( we have a bag full ) I've had no success with roses but I do like a yellow one( don't know why🤷♀️😊). But would love to try and make this one work. Thanks for any advise anyone can offer.
Totally knackered. Spent the day
digging holes for numerous Dahlias, bathing and planting them. Just
as the basin was empty again, my order from TCL arrived. After a good
soak, 12 more roses are now settling in. The angle of my photo is not
reflecting the correct dimension of the flower bed. There is room for
all of them. I feel a bit sorry for the neighbour who agreed to water
my plants in April.
@Nollie, very supportive of OH to
suggest vertical plant space. You could put the clematis in the
flower bed and train it towards the flower boat.
@Marlorena, thank you for the advise on
below ground chemical reactions. I ripped out a number of one-leaf
tulips again today. I will grow them in pots going forward as annuals
as I cannot be bothered to feed them. On the daffodil foliage, I hide
the aging leaves by planting peonies close to / in front of them.
Their foliage hides the sad view.
Reading about your salvia order @WAMS,
I just had to unearth this combination with The Fairy.
@Agnasia, I fully support the
suggestestion for Chandos Beauty. Outstanding fragrance. Less apricot
and more soft pink is Prince Jardinier, outstanding scent, too.
@ElbFee I like your matching blue pots... I can see you've been really busy, all those lovely roses for us to enjoy as well, this summer..
@Songbird-2 Hello and welcome to you too.. great to see you.. Yes that's no problem in using your JI no.2, I often use this as well.. what I would advise, but only if you have it, is to mix in some ordinary multi purpose compost, I often do a 50/50 split, or 60/40, or even just a few handfuls. It lightens it, otherwise it's very heavy and rather dense on its own, but you don't have to do this, you can use your JI on its own if you wish.. you could also mix in some pea shingle/gravel instead if you have that..
@Songbird-2 when growing roses in containers long term you need to either use a mix of John Innes No 3 and multi purpose compost or a specially formulated Rose and shrub compost. I use Westland Rose Planting and Potting Mix but there are others available.
Thansk @Marlorena and @rossdriscoll13 for the advice. OH and I are going to a garden centre at the weekend so will look out for the John Innes No3 but failing that, I will mix some mpc with the John Innes Number 2 and add a little grit. Here goes!
Eventually , if it comes good this year I will try and find a spot in the ground for it. Thanks!
Lots of recommendations for Chandos Beauty! It looks really pretty, I’m not sure how to properly describe it but it’s a more traditional looking rose. Similar to Koko Loko. @Alfie_ Hitchin isn’t too far so could definitely pay them a visit.
Thank you @Marlorena for the photo of Boscobel. It’s still lovely but might not sit so well with my planting. Aah yes I think I had read that about joie de vivre, thank you for reminding me!
I had a look at the giftaplant website that @Rojas posted and spotted a possible Abraham Darby, they also show Evelyn but as out of stock.
You’ve been busy @ElbFee! An amazing pot collection. Appreciate the recommendations.
@Songbird-2 - Happy 50th Wedding Anniversary. A great idea to buy a rose to commemorate it. Harkness roses are healthy and easy to grow so don’t worry I’m sure it will do well in your garden.
@agnasia - I know what you mean. It looks like a classic florist rose which is a hybrid tea. Quite a lot of the Harkness’ roses are HT like @Songbird-2 ‘s 50th Ann. rose.
Just out of interest I would like to know what everyone’s favourite rose shape is. You can only choose one:
