So many beautiful blooms everyone, well done! It is wonderful to see the variety and listen to the conversations about them. I feel embarrassed that I have had hardly any blooms on my roses. It could be lack of light but I did not cut any of them back and they are probably between ages four and five. Is pruning in late winter crucial? They are mostly DA roses and I read somewhere not to prune them when young! I am inspired to be more ruthless with them if it gets results as seen on here!
Sorry to witness the demise of the forum. 😥😥😥😡😡😡I am Spartacus
We had strong overnight rain two days ago, a short storm yesterday and some showers again today, so it's getting messy with petals everywhere.
PAoK, huge blooms NoID red, also huge this year 'Astronomia', I still have it because I was too lazy to dig it out, and now I actually consider moving it 'Amande Patternote'/'Joasine Hanet' 'Comtessa' 'The Generous Gardener' 'Mileva' aka 'Renee van Wegberg'
@clematisdorset I prune the DA roses, other than climbers, quite short; and there have been very floriferous. They are heavy feeders, so a liberal dose of farmyard manure has done them good this season.

And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth
I rarely write on here, just browse at stunning roses My knowledge is very limited but I am learning. @Mr. Vine Eye Graham Thomas is one roses I do know there is a garden nearby with a hedge of this rose. Lovely glossy leaves too. This I will take a walk that way tomorrow.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.
@Marlorena, unfortunately my two potted 'Elizabeths' have not looked as good as last year when they were new. I have been assiduous in feeding and watering so not sure why they're a bit pathetic. The blooms are much paler than yours as well and the plants have terrible blackspot. I haven't given them a midsummer feed yet.
@Athelas thank you so much for such a good explanation!
@cooldoc you have sold me on it then, I love ones I can cut and bring inside to enjoy.
@Marlorena I’ll avidly await your decision on if it will make the cut then!
Some pics of my other roses, all are new apart from the red and white ones which I got end of last summer.
Special Grandad with lots of buds still to open:
Unidentified white patio:
Zephirin Drouhins on an arch and looking much better after a good soak:
Timeless purple:
Raspberry Cream Twirl, I had my eye on it for a while and put it at the back of a border instead of on my arch, where I chose ZD instead as RCT was supposed to be only lightly scented, but it smells absolutely wonderful to me and looks incredible especially in the sun. Wish I’d planted them the other way around now!
All of your pics are giving me so much inspiration when bare root season comes around, if I can hold off until then.
@Lizzie27 I am finding this rose most frustrating... photographing my plants is a major hobby, yet no matter what position I get myself into, I cannot get a decent shot of this rose, all I see is foliage.. the colours just don't stand out for me.. and I'm always deadheading as the blooms soon disintegrate.. as for scent @cooldoc .. forget it, I had more in the first year.. whatever time of day and I'm out there sometimes at 6am ..
Lucky you to have 'Raspberry Cream Twirl'.. I've seen this elsewhere and admired it for its floriferous nature and standout colour. I always thought it had no scent.. so that's good to know..
How old? We were fortunate to inherit a very mature garden when we moved in last September. We’re wondering now, if it is possible at all to judge the age of the amazing array of roses? (including the one attached). Any advice would be welcomed, thanks.
A bit like with a tree trunk look at the base. If it's fat and woody and gnarled then they're old. The chunkier, the older.
If you mean the age of the individual varieties as in when they were bred, you'll have to find the name first - if you post pics of bush, foliage and flower. Someone on here might recognise them.
Thank you. The age of the rose itself was the angle, so what you said is helpful. We have a number of them with very wide bases and stalks, so guessing a good few years! Cheers, Ian
