..as Mary Berry once said.. ''Chandos Beauty is such a lovely rose''.. I'm not sure how many she's familiar with, but couldn't disagree with that..
@Desi_in_London Yes I know what you mean, I'm also very careful to avoid other properties or cars in my pictures..
@Discandied You may be one of the few people in the country growing alba odorata... does it show climbing tendencies for you? and is it sweetly scented, as I understand it to be.. are you able to get a photo of its foliage sometime? I'd like to see it.. thanks..
@Marlorena I got it from Beales in 2012. It has survived being dug up, spending some time in a pot pots, then being replanted twice now, though the other roses I had then did not. I thought I might lose it this past winter because it got down to about -12 here. It died back quite a bit, but fortunately pulled through, though is still looking a bit worse for wear with yellowed leaves.
Beales sold it as just 'odorata' rather than any specific variety. I understand there are probably many varieties and they are quite diverse.
It has been a well behaved shrub for me - no climbing tendancies at all. It has a very strong musky, slightly fruity fragrance - not really comparable to other roses I have had, or smelled elsewhere. In strength it is comparable to rose de rescht and other very fragrant old roses, but completely different in character.
@Discandied ..thanks or taking the trouble... the leaves are not as deep green as I expected to see, for a bracteata hybrid but I note you are also having problems with yellowing foliage, as I am.. probably due to cool weather I think, as much as anything..
Interesting observations.. the scent sounds rather nice and it's bounced back well from the winter.. a most unusual variety..
I think it may be a Rosa x odorata chinensis/ gigantea hybrid. It looks and behaves more like Hume's Blush Tea-Scented China is supposed to than anything else, though not sure it is an exact match based on the photos I have seen. I think different, related roses are sold under the same name, so it may be a form of it. https://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.3341
'A Million Dreams', the first bloom. Fragrant, sweet floral fragrance but not really rosy, it smells like when you walk into a flower shop. Amazing 'Amazing Day' 'Reine des Violettes'
We are due what is basically a heatwave here, 20-21°C in the next week, and no rain for a month or so, everything's getting really dry.
I wish I was getting it edhelka... your RdeV is a beautiful colour..
@Discandied Oh ok, I think I've been referring to a different rose.. like you say, a number going under similar names.. I had 'Hume's Blush Tea Scented China' here at one time.. this is the only photo I have left of it.. this looks to be the same as what you have..
GdF - very excited to see these nearly open buds for the first time. ZD on the arch Margaret Merrill GJ not much perfume yet Elizabeth , foliage not so good. My first ever rose from a cutting - but which one!! Front to back, Happy Birthday, pink Nathalie Nypels, unknown apricot and Penelope up on the wall/fence. New Dawn on the shed, had a hard prune earlier this year.
I walked past the rose I posted a little while that looked lovely and bushy. So curious as to what it is. Sadly it looks as though something has flattened it - not sure if the wind would be enough to do this? It reminds me of my Roald Dahl although I’d say the scent is a bit stronger. Any thoughts on ID?
This also looked lovely, shame I couldn’t get close enough to smell it.
It’s interesting the roses along this road seem to be further on than mine, as it’s so close to my home.
I've just had another long catching up session. So many beautiful roses and some I haven't heard of.
One little request - please would you write the roses' names in full, most of you do, but there are some that only the initials are given and I wanted to know their names.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
