..is it the start of summer? If anyone wants to move a rose I recommend you do so and don't worry about it, as it's like winter out there.. the rose will hardly know..
'Wild Rover'.. I always think I'm getting desperate taking photos like this, but it is rather pretty.. 'Amelie Nothomb'.. 'Lilac Bouquet'..
Thunder, lightning and rain here too, the temperature has suddenly dropped by 10c! Despite a heatwave in April here and plenty of early roses, my young perennials bought in 9cm pots are really slow to get going. The roots would normally be filling their bigger pots and they’d all be planted out by now. Most look as if they need another month.
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
This Desdemona in the rain. It was quite windy too yesterday, but as its against a south facing wall its survived. Just a question, was I too tentative with its winter prune, as its becoming quite leggy this year ( only a last year's potted rose in June) or is this its normal habit.
Hi @Marlorena I couldn't help but admire your magnificent 'Wild Rover'. If all goes well I will have another trellis to plant up come the end of the summer, which will be about 7-8ft high. Seeing your 'Wild Rover', I thought maybe that would be suitable, but Beales describe theirs as a 4'x2' shrub. Are there two versions. Cheers.
Such lovely roses.. as they all are upthread too.. displayed beautifully..
@peteS Ignore Beales, they are conservative with their size estimates and sometimes way out.. I'm not sure this rose is for you as you would have to tolerate some black spot, which can occur quite early in the season. I take little notice of it, and on my plants it usually affects the lower parts mostly.. If you're prepared to tolerate it, removing some leaves here and there, then you might like it.. I never recommend the rose due to this susceptibility..
@purplerallim Is your Desdemona situated north facing? it seems to be reaching out .. otherwise it looks very happy and I shouldn't worry about it.. you can prune back after the first flush..
...some pics for today.. ''Surpassing Beauty''.. which has a scent to match the colour.. 'Lady of Shalott'.. 'Desdemona'.. 'Forever Royal'.. ..'Mutabilis' + herbaceous.. ..seeded white Foxglove.. Aquilegia 'Blue Barlow'.. 'Cornelia'.. ..rose border.. .. a quiet corner.. Delphinium 'Moonbeam' at the front..
I'm going to have to get Desdemona.... @CatDouch ... obviously your definition of "covered in black spot" is very different from mine! @Marlorena -- "I always think I'm getting desperate taking photos like this..."---most of my photos are like that! ( in my defence the combination of my photography skills and the size of my outdoor space means it's basically impossible to take a photo other than a close-up which doesn't encroach on others' property)
Some from me - Iceberg and Julia Child progression 26-30 may
Blush noisette with finally one of the flowers open : And Chandos Beauty 28th-31May . Two different blooms left and right, the right hand one ( first bloom) looked even ropier when it first started to open ( insect damage i think ) but has more or less sorted itself out as it opened without me removing any petals. This rose flowered for me on 4 May last year.

No Desdemona faces west-ish, gets sun from late morning and all afternoon.
