...I really wish I had a wall to grow roses against but there is hard standing around every bit of the house...but that wall..sigh.
I have the same challenge Tack, but the lure of a wall of roses in bloom is hard to suppress isn't it? I'm trying Blush Noisette grown in a large container that I built from pallets.
@Marlorena Thanks for the info on Bullnosing... I don't remember having a discussion about this before.. or I missed that post.. Remember discussing about mineral deficiencies.. Now I tried going through lot of my pics and unfortunately I have not captured the sickly looking leaves or new growth as I hated to see them in my plants.. remember seeing both the buds and new growth being abnormal.. if you type 'thrip damage on roses' then you would see similar images popping up on google.. leaves deformed, wrinkled and buds small, failing to develop..
Now, I know it's not good to rely on google for info (like our patients who read up something rare and ask us about it ).. but if it was mineral deficiency, I dunno why they suddenly improved with spraying..
moreover all plants got similar treatment from me in terms of fertilizer and watering.. why was some being affected more than others.. Now the new ones were not affected much and possible causes could be a) they were new and pests could not get to them or b) they were in fresh compost and so have not run out of nutrients..
Now, I have decided to fight one thing at a time.. assuming they are pests; prune by end of 1st or 2nd week of Feb.. to avoid temptation of using pesticides (only if I hit a wall).. introduce predators by March (hoping the climate will be appropriate).. praying that the new once a year DA fertilizer would be enough for micro nutrients..
Baader-Meinhof is the phenomenon where one stumbles upon some obscure piece of information—often an unfamiliar word or name—and soon afterwards encounters the same subject again, often repeatedly.
Hope that it is not pests and my brain is playing tricks with me..
Now back to happier topics.. 15% off everything on Harkness..
I got a bucket of Vitax rose food, 4.5kg, from Amazon. It was about £14.50 and postage was free. Maths isn't my strong suit but at 25g a rose per application, it *should* comfortably cover two applications per rose this year.
Is there a discount code for Harkness? I haven't had an email.☹🎻
And wow @Marlorena... a garden tour of New Zealand that doesn't take in Christchurch would be like a Shakespeare tour that omitted Stratford upon Avon or the Globe Theatre in London. (At least they don't say the humongous price includes "all tips and gratuities" as Paul Zimmerman's England rose garden tour does. LOL.)
WAMS, can you post a snap of its constituents...? remember looking into it last year but couldn find the micro nutrient bit mentioned on DA's.. not sure if that matters though...
@cooldoc Your Baader-Meinhof was well received and understood, and seeing as you're a Doc, I'm happy to take your word for it.. second opinions though, so what I will say is that, yes on the foliage, very probably, but those distorted buds I think are due to something else. All those google images of thrip damage on opening blooms are from overseas, mostly warm climates, and I've always thought it was more an issue for them. If you happen to check the RHS about Thrips, nowhere does it say roses, but lots of other plants. I've had Fuchsias badly affected I think..
I know you had lots of problems last Spring with your roses, so as long as you feel you've pinpointed the problem, you can get it under control. I might have tried SB Invigorator if I was a sprayer..
Let us know how you get on with this new fertilizer, I'm a bit intrigued by it..
@Imprevu ..that's a high wall, I don't expect you will be wanting your rose to get much taller than that..?
@WhereAreMySecateurs Yes an omission indeed, I suppose they just couldn't do it all.. they did get an offer from a rose garden in Nelson, but had to turn it down.. seems the rather smelly geysers of Rotorua won out.. I've been to all those places they're going, except the roses. I used to think they were such a bore.. I had an exciting flight from Rotorua to Mt. Cook, and an even more exciting [frightening?] trip back on the Picton Ferry.. the stuff of nightmares..
Yes I did use SB last year.. may be I will check the ph of my pot compost tomorrow and see if I can remedy it.. atleast the nutrient lock bit is out of my mind...

Sure, cooldoc (sorry it's a tiny bit blurry). It's not that detailed.
