@Nollie Do they produce flowers lower down as well? I had intentionally bend one of the long canes of Louise Odier in hope that it will perform better rather than shooting straight up as I have nothing to support it..
I think they went dormant Marlorena.. by that I mean they just stood still, no new growth but did not shed their leaves.. but then, as I said earlier, most Austins did not.. on left side (the cluster of pots) you can see Emily, Behind her BMS.. despite having a prolonged freezing period followed by windy conditions and freeze again.. the defoliated one in the pic is Twilight Zone.. That just dropped all the leaves by December..
Edited to add; YL was always in bloom in its 2nd year with a wonderful fragrance..
Nearly all of my roses still have leaves on but like newbie, I am pruning them lower than the leaves start in most cases. It does speed things up lol. I just pruned Armada nearly to ground level so it will hopefully do a bit more this year than last. But this thread is teaching me that even if you kill the rose it is no big deal because you can always replace a rose with five more.
Love Song is proving a great rose, very floriferous, I think this was one cane!
Sadly not re MIP @Tack, hardstanding around most of my walls too, except for one free corner which was bagged early on by OH for a wisteria. I’m going to make a freestanding raised bed/trellis arrangement for it to disguise a parking space. @cooldoc, in theory yes, but all those long canes shot up at the end of last summer, so haven’t produced any laterals yet - this summer, hopefully!
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
if my memory serves me right, you have exhibited the standards in such a way that people have got inspired/ envy to get more standards.. no one can demo them better than you.. so go for it
Did some pruning today, not as much as I’d hoped but I made a start at least. Did the potted roses at the front of the house + Lady of the Lake.
This was the job that took up most of the time, sorting Lady of Shalott, yet in the first before and after photos it doesn’t look like much changed!
I untied the whole thing and then had to untwine the canes and weave them back together in better positions - moving some canes closer to the wall and others on to the outside so that I can get them where I wanted for attaching to the wall. Good that she has quite flexible canes, but it was still very awkward as they kept catching on each other...and me! I sprung a few leaks 😅 I hate putting gloves on and off so they end up just staying on the floor.
I think the angle in the second pair of photos maybe shows it better.
@Tack - Malvern Hills - by the time I’ve pruned it there shouldn’t be that much leaf left and since I’ll have to be up a ladder anyway I’ll just pull them off while I’m there.
Ghislaine is going to be the hardest by far to sort. Really hard to access now, nowhere to put a ladder without squashing something, huge and covered in leaves still. I’d be tempted to just use the long reach pruner and do a rough job of it. But I’ve seen that it’s come loose from one of the ties higher up. So I’ll need to get up to replace it. Not looking forward to that.
In fact I might force myself to do that next and get it out of the way!
I was laughing at your edits @pitter-patter sums up most of our condition.. if there was an emoji with someone hitting me with a pot, I would add that to yours.. as my other half will lose it if I order more..
@Marlorena It was 50+ last year.. still is I guess.. When I added those bare roots which I got from TCL, I had taken out almost similar amount of them from the pots.. I think I posted about them few months ago.. other than that few isolated purchases.. so hopefully still 50+ but not 60... will do a count next week.. After potting up Platinum Jubilee (Harkness).. was kinda disappointed with its scent.. anyways, will give it one chance..

I suppose we shouldn't be surprised that the one which defoliated was bred in California..
How many potted roses do you have now? and are you adding any more this Spring?
