I scrape the top layer of compost for potted roses and top up the compost/JI3 every year, as there is some shrinkage. Moreover, the roses need to be repotted every 3 or 4 years. It's a big task I have this year, as many of my potted ones are ready for repotting
Oxford. The City of Dreaming Spires.
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth
I’ve sworn off reds and HTs though @purplerallim, mine have +40c, searing Saharan winds and hot stone walls to contend with, basically hostile conditions that test any rose! You can whack your Ruby Wedding HT down to 4-6” no problem, it will shoot back up and flower on the new growth.
I have a mass of repotting to do this year too, in fact one is overdue by at least two years!
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
A local friend (the lady who gave me the Lark) was throwing out the Pilgrim, William Shakespeare 2000, Prospero, Nostalgia, William&Catherine, Susie and Sugar Moon... so it looks like I have some digging to do. She told me I can bin them if I want. I don't want.😁
I already have ws2000 on order so may swap that for something else from TW if they let me.
Wow Secateurs that is a good haul. I fancy WS2000 too after Nollie's pics. Actually I think we all need pics, even better video, when Nollie repots Gertrude J
I have found your Smudge thread Nollie, I do feel for poor old Bill, will read with interest how it goes.
Just watered the balcony pots and thought I'd share that I think Claire Marshall makes a great pot rose. TW out of WS2000, probably just as well for me.
I’m wondering if I should just add a new GJ to my TCL order and start again, I feel sure I will wreck both pot and rose if and when I finally get around to tackling it.
Oh and how are you getting on with Heidi Klum, Tack, didn’t you get one eventually?
Excellent friend to have WAMS, does she give reasons why she is getting rid - not up to scratch somehow or does she just fancy a change?

We all have such different experiences of the same rose. My Heidi Klum started very healthy, good fragrance and bloomer. So much so I considered putting her in the ground, but it all went sharply downhill after that. She did perk up considerably after a tonne of food and rainwater, then slumped again. I decided she was just far too difficult and demanding!

You can put them on Olio and Freecycle etc. I imagine someone would snap them up.
I'm giving away Malvern Hills and possibly Edith Cavell.
I emailed Trevor White to cancel WS2000 just before, @Tack, so they should have another if you email/ring them. The pics on here of it are fabulous, aren't they?
@Nollie I think my rosey friend has Marlorena tendencies- she's academic, inquisitive and loves trying different roses. But she has a small garden and has to be ruthless. She ditched Nostalgia because she prefers Double Delight, Prospero because it blackspotted, William and Catherine because it shatters too quickly, Susie because it was sold as a "patio climber" but already clearly going to be more of a "climber climber." And I just looked and realised she also gave me Lochinvar- which is too thorny. But it's so pretty, though I have no idea what a Scottish rose is.
Lol at video/audio of Gertrude J being repotted. Definitely dark Web material.😄
William and Catherine is nearly planted, the dog very interested as always.
I really don't have the stomach or the budget for buying dozens of rose plants and ditching them. I personally would rather wait, be really sure and try and get it right first time. Tricky, I know. It also wastes years, in my small garden, waiting to see what happens and then feeling disappointed. So now I want few, more successful goes; no "screw it" buys or sale buys or curiosity buys. I am trying to be less promiscous.
