Regarding two meters spacing between climbers , especially with MAC I tend to agree with Nollie.
I have two GdF , who are rather known as moderate climbers , spaced 1,5 meter from another climber and I’m merging them already since this summer. ( year two)
but a wall of roses is just so beautiful 😍 .
@Nollie that smudge is so cute!

got a message already of Lens my order will be normally shipped out this week. The frost is not expected this weekend so maybe I can plant 🌱

Thank you so much for your input re spacing.  I was going on the principle of merging the Mme Alfred Carriere into the Zepherine Drouhin by about 50-75cm so that I get an ombre effect as they merge.  Also the wall is about 1.6 mtrs tall (say 5.5' in old money) and I do not mind if it tumbles over the other side.  The other side is my white border with a climbing hydrangea further along i.e. not directly behind the roses.

Ideally the effect I am looking to achieve is, as you say, a wall of roses.  A cottage type tightly filled, yet informal border.

The thought of the wall of roses also will help it to stand its ground as the backdrop to the mixed border in front of it, which will have some high plants i.e. Cardoons, Delphinium and Foxgloves (there will be two-three more roses within the border).

I will be planting the climbing roses at the weekend, so I still have time to widen the gaps if you think it advantageous for the maintenance over the following years.

Everyone's advice is welcome and I take it all onboard.  I certainly do not want to be 3 years down the line and regret planting them so close and having to prune back aggressively.

    Thank you.

Re spacing for those climbing roses.. thing is, they grow at different speeds and Mme AC can be quite overwhelming, especially down south.. Presume the same up in Aberdeen..  ZD takes her time a bit...  consider 8 foot apart if possible, it just looks better and is the usual recommended distance.. 10 foot wouldn't be too far when using Mme AC in a border..
Mine was in Cornwall, but I got a 12-15 feet spread from it in the first year, and not a single bloom.. north facing 6 foot wall..  but it doesn't have to become a monster with control..

The consensus there then is give at least your MACs a bit more space Peter and I’m sure you will still achieve your wall of roses ombre effect. I’ve just checked my wire spacings btw and they are 40cm apart. In retrospect I would’ve gone with Mr. Vine Eye’s advice of 30cm apart for the upper wires and maybe started a bit higher up, since I never used the lower wire.

I might make that adjustment since I’m having to start my whole climbing rose fence again. The roots of a wild plum tree in the verge outside totally invaded the bed so I’m currently waiting for the thaw so I can dig down to install a deeper root barrier before replanting. I’d originally given MAC two fence panels, so 4m!
