Hello, @Allyblueeyes. I have climbing Arthur Bell on a north-north-east facing fence (gets a smidgeon of sunshine) and it does great, grows well, and is always in bloom from May till the end of the season. Huge fragrant yellow clusters, very healthy and always throwing out new basals. But it isn't a DA.
@JessicaS I have Mill on the floss and it was a thin-poor specimen from TCL two years back. Last year it grew really tall and threw strong thick basals. I like the flower form which is medium sized deep cupped bloom, unique DA colour and nice fruity scent.
@JessicaS mine is getting morning sun and I don’t recall seeing them balled or fried. I have seen the flowers in the DA garden in the afternoon sun and blooms were looking good.
@Allyblueeyes, my rose border is 4.5m x 1m, so about the same size as your border. I have 6 DA medium sized shrub roses plus a rambler in mine. It is nicely filled, but not overfilled at that density.
Just posted off the new DA Handbook of Roses to my mother in New Zealand. She likes lording it over her sisters, fellow rose enthusiasts, who don't have a daughter in England.😁
People have been complaining about it on Facebook but I thought the square shape, taller spine and glorious Queen of Sweden cover made it nicer than previous years' ones I have seen, actually.
I received the catalogue today... well we all know DA roses are now a religion to many people across the world, but this is positively monotheistic... only 2 non-DA roses get a mention. Being something of a rose snob - this is not for the serious rosarian in my opinion.. The message is - it's their roses or nothing.. On a technical note, I've never liked the matt finish and stiffness to the pages.
So if you haven't already got one, and prefer to diversify, I recommend Peter Beales's quite excellent catalogue of roses... the pages are glossy, the photography is beautiful and every rose gets its picture... and, it covers much of their range.. plus lots of other useful information.
I have the 2022 one, but the new one should be out soon.. can't wait for that.. Here are a few pics from last year's..
I do like the way Beales compile their catalogue too. By rose type, then by colour, then by height. Each rose fully described and its characteristics and suitability itemised with icons.

Thank you @WAMS, that’s good to know. No matter if it’s not a DA, anything that thrives in that position will be considered 🌹👍🏻
