Good to know I still possess the power of recall, Jessica. Well, on occasion!
I’m still hoping for a final flush from a number of roses that have spring-like growth and buds. Three DAs - Munstead Wood, The Prince and WS2000 - are looking especially promising but Palais Biron is leading the pack in the reddish purple department:
The Prince, to it’s credit, is looking the healthiest of all my roses with barely a blemish on the fulsome foliage:
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
The Prince looks splendid, @Nollie. Awww, hope I manage to get it before it sells out at TW next year. Still... Darcey, WS2000 and Falstaff are coming, so mustn't be greedy!
This is a really nice book (published 1993, revised 1996), for a fiver on ebay. I think @Marlorena mentioned it among others. Particularly nice are the descriptions of some of the older roses which Trevor White is bringing back, incl. Evelyn which I can't wait to receive.
I finally got round to digging a new bed and planting the Rugosa plants that I grew from seed last year. Done them in a staggered 5 at the back for at the front to try and make a hedge.
They've been starting to look sad from being in those pots so long, so think they'll welcome some new soil to stretch out in.
Some of the roses here think it is spring whereas many have already started dropping leaves and getting ready for winter.
A few photos taken today: Golden Showers - was first to bloom, looks like it is going to be the last too. Joie de vivre Walferdange Red finesse
Golden celebration
Papa Meilland - has a sweet fragrance.
I think Munstead Wood is slowly giving up the ghost here; it suffered from mildew, has now been defoliated completely and looks pathetic. Last year, it was a great performer here. There must be some reason, which they're not divulging, for DA to have shut down sales of some of the fairly recent roses.
Oxford. The City of Dreaming Spires.
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth
Sometimes the old ones are the best @WhereAreMySecateurs, another oldie gem I consult a lot is Peter Beales’ ‘Classic Roses’ - a very useful reference book if you are into old roses.
That’s going to look fab @Mr. Vine Eye. I tried a rugosa alba hedge here but they hated my conditions and all died, so did Hansa - so I concluded rugosas are not for me!
@Eustace, Joie de Vivre is beautiful, a good rose for Edhelka as well, I seem to recall. I’m really getting into those softer colours (so long as they are not coral!).
My Munstead Wood trio took a good 4 years to come into it’s own and hasn’t looked back. It’s starting to get some leaf senescence now, but a week ago it was fully foliated and healthy. It’s still putting out buds. Not this summer scorcher, but usually it’s very heat tolerant for a dark rose, so really works for me.
Souvenir de Marcel Proust has half a dozen big blooms on it, not so full as earlier in the season but this one is a full 5” across:
I was moving pots around and accidentally created this conjunction of William Shakespeare 2000 and Lady Emma Hamilton. It looks like WS is bleeding onto Lady Em:
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
William Shakespeare 2000 is the first of my three dark DAs with a fully opened bloom. A floppier habit, so far (it’s new) and smaller blooms than Munstead Wood and The Prince but the fragrance is outstanding, the best of the three:
MW should be next:
Followed by TP:
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
Was waiting for the fence to be replaced to put The Lark Ascending in the ground but couldn't wait any longer- it was huge and heavy and outgrowing the pot. I have put it where it should get 4-5hours of direct sunlight and a little dappled sunlight afterwards- hope that's enough.
Now nursing all the wounds the Lark inflicted on me. I completely underestimated how heavy the plant and rootball would be for a 2/3-year-old plant, too.... exhausted.
Glad to hear WS2000 smells fab, Nollie. All your reds look beautiful.
@Nollie your purple list WS2000 and The Prince are looking fabulous. I will try to add the purple lodge in the near future. How do you find the fragrance on it please?
The roses are shutting down but there are some blooms here and there.

Draga — when it’s like this I love it

My Royal William HT is still blooming nicely. It's a deeper red than it looks in the pic.f
