Any new rose releases caught your eye this year? Not that I need any more roses since I will be snowed under with bare root deliveries soon!
Divina, a new climber, looks good. Tantau mark fragrance out of 5 and disease resistance out of 4 so it gets a rare full marks. As a comparison, they give Soul 4/5 for fragrance and that is really strong and delicious to my nose. Vomit-inducing text though 😆
And any you wished you had bought?
I wish I had got Vichy from Delbard instead of their new Folle Courtisane. I swithered between the two last year and picked FC. The latter turned out not to my taste and smelt medicinally repellent! Vichy is a floribunda that they say has a very strong scent of grapefruit and rose. I’m wondering it it might be similar to La Rose de Molinard in that respect. The blooms do look gently cupped, but with fewer petals it’s possibly less inclined to ball and spoil in rain than LRdM:
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
Are you going to kiss Divina awake and let her enchant you with her blah blah etc, @Nollie? 😆
I keep wondering about ordering the new white/pink Harkness rose named in honour of the late Deborah James. The blooms look perfect. I wish they included shots of the whole bush on their site, though.
@Alfie_ ..rather you than me with that, as it's not the easiest rose to deal with unfortunately, but it's pretty on your wall, however it does seem to require some controlling as it's getting out of hand and almost to your rooftop. I could only lean out the window and trim bits off that were in the way, but if you are adept with ladders then some dead wood is visible that needs taking out, but I cannot see how you can train below the right window because there doesn't seem to be any support in place, no vine eyes or wires. White rendering may not be suitable for that, I wouldn't know, but it's going to be difficult to train across without.
I've only grown this rose on a low wall with easy access for pruning, but it's one of those roses that flowers better the less is done to it. So if you want maximum flowering next summer, you wouldn't want to do too much, but if you need to sort it out and get brutal, flowering might be less next year but you'll have a more manageable plant for the future.. I'd go with the latter option of course, as I can't stand an unruly rose.. best of luck..
..No new roses for me right now. I think I'll wait until end Feb..
Hips on 'Armada'.. from earlier.. some are huge..
'Wilhelm'..a red Kordes shrub rose, that doesn't need deadheading to continue flowering, so hips can stay on.. that way they colour up earlier..
'Tottering by Gently'.. another that doesn't need to be deadhead as it continues to produce flowering shoots regardless, however I do deadhead the first flush only..
'Wild Rover'.. these will colour up by January, at which point they are ready if seeds are required.. they do germinate, I've tried it..
Yes Vichy does appeal very much - it’s hard to get any but the most popular Delbard roses other than direct from them and I couldn’t justify the postage for one rose. However, I have just spotted it on the German website (schmid-gartenpflanzen.de) through which I (think!) I ordered the three old Austins.
S-G still have a good range of oldies, not all listed under ‘English Roses’ so worth name searching. They probably aren’t allowed to send them to the UK, but maybe worth a shot if anyone is desperate for something..

..thanks for checking Nollie, no surprise there really.. I wonder if they ever did send to us even when in the E.U. the only one from those days I've ordered from successfully, was 16-Eichen who appear to be gone out of business.. or their website just doesn't work..

Gertrude is bursting out all over..
Im not paying DAs current prices though - the bareroots cost almost as much as their potted roses did a few years ago!
