My experience is the same as newbie's, it varies between roses. I have done a lot of repotting and some planting out this winter and I cannot predict which rose will have a big rootmass. The roses have been in pots between 2 and 4 years so nothing too ancient though.
Some very well turned out garden assistants and house ornaments, good to see I caught sight of the dog art before reading the caption and was slightly concerned for Bill for a second, something in the face area...amazingly good work though, I wouldn't want to sweep it up.
Welcome back @peteS and @celcius_kkw, look forward to seeing your roses again this year.
Some hard work being done by some of you guys at the minute. I'm about done in the garden, apart from planting the new perennials but I need to double check the spaces. After seeing it mentioned 15 times while I was catching up, I went out and snipped the remaining old leaves and leaf stems from The Bishop (an instant favourite from last year), Pergolese and Perfume Dreams.
There is some or more new growth on all of mine now except Hot Chocolate which I hacked back in the hope of provoking it back into a floribunda shape. Last year it grew into a 5' x 1' column of thorns.
Some pleasing new growth on the Parkdirektor. This one I planted a few years ago in a grim aspect, knowing it would get no sunlight until it etiolated to a certain height. I also have to feed and water it lots as it is on higher ground than the other side of the fence. Luckily it has rained the usual amount over winter and I have collected over 4500 litres however I am on a meter so that is essentially all I have til September I'm still not exactly certain what I lost last year when I ran out of rainwater but almost definitely my last two Actaea. I gave them grey water from the washing machine and shower and they did not appreciate it.
A year with 'Marie Pavie'.. a popular Polyantha, and deservedly so..
This one came from TCL on an unknown rootstock.. potted up in 15'' x 15'' pot.. ..first flowers in June.. sweetly scented, quite small.. ..lovely healthy foliage..
..by Oct I decided to plant in ground.. ..following March, already showing signs of mineral deficiency in my soil.. came into bud very early and was in bloom by mid April.. but deteriorated through summer so was taken out.. I now have a new one planted in better conditions..
something which I came across on youtube.. those thick stems... wish we got the same in UK.. the same channel had a Rose "bonsai" vid as well.. found that really interesting when we are struggling with pot sizes and space...
Bright and beautiful standards! Would look splendid in the sunshine.
Is it OK to leave these name tags on the roses for the first season? I normally take them off, but having added a fair few roses this winter I can't keep track of what's what without consulting the labels yet. Do the labels hurt the rose or restrict its growth at all if they are slightly loose like this?
